Cellular service fared much better during Isabel than during the '03 outage last month. Unlike the power outage, call volume on the East Coast during Isabel was below average (thanks to the evacuation) which allowed a smaller number of towers to keep everything up. Most towers are now equipped with a generator that can keep calls going long after the 8-hour battery backup gives up. Sprint PCS seemed to have been the worst hit with some markets blinking off the map, while others like AT&T Wireless reported only minimal damage.
