For various reasons worldwide shipments of cellular phones have surged, causing a squeeze on supply. Reasons for the brisk sales have varied from the Christmas season to improving economic conditions to cheaper hand sets. The latest estimates for sales this year hover around 500 million handsets. We reported on a major increase in sales for the third quarter last month. Motorola is having an especially hard time keeping up with demand--cheaper phones like the V300 have been in very high demand, and the company is running out of camera components. It even had to delay the more powerful V600 until next year. [via PhoneScoop]
