Carriers brace for Ivan

Cell phone carriers are once again preparing for a hurricane--this time in multiple states. While initial projections put Ivan on the battered Gulf Coast of Florida, forecasters are now predicting that the strong category 4 storm will slam into the Florida Panhandle, Alabama, Mississippi or Louisiana. With a storm surge of 10-16 feet, many cell towers could be knocked offline for extended amounts of time. Most carriers have sent out boilerplate press releases that detail their storm plans. These plans have been used twice in the last month and have not changed except for the wider geographic area. Meanwhile Tropical Storm Jeanne brews in the Atlantic, adding to what could become a record tropical season.
