SMS.ac discussion: scam, spam or fun?

Apr 03 2005 - 12:31 PM ET | SMS
smsac.gifWe've heard a lot about a company called SMS.ac from our readers. Online investigation reveals a lot of angry former customers (and a few employees). We'd like to hear what you have to say, either positive or negative. For unfamiliar readers, SMS.ac is a community that uses text messages to interact. The company makes money by using Premium SMS messages (messages that you pay an extra fee to receive). The company claims a membership north of 30 million users worldwide, though doesn't break the figure down for active vs. inactive. Use the comment feature on this article to sound off. I got an email from a friend so I registered. Didn't know that I was being charged so I quit as soon as I found out. Hope my friends didn't get an email from me!

Ray Apr 03 2005

I once also got an email from a friend of mine, I signed up too. I never really used it, and somehow, i dont know how they got all my friends emails, and started sending messages to all of them, asking to sign up. These emails were kind of pushy too, saying " hey, its the 3rd time I have been inviting you, sign up and join me!" So I closed the account!

Mike Apr 03 2005

I've gotten several invitations, but I never signed on. If it costs something I think I'll stay away.

SMS.AC is a deceptive company and if successful could ruin the SMS channel for everyone. SMS is not hotmail, and if it were - I would ask my mobile provider to switch it off.

I have ask the Australian Communications Commission to shut them down.

Apr 03 2005

Stay away!

mehool Apr 04 2005

they are so bold that they actually have a link on their page when you sign up asking you to enter your hotmail address and password so that they can send all of your contacts sms.ac spam. They actually ask for your password! ridonkulous.

colbert Apr 04 2005

A lot of people got scam by SMS.AC as they did not realise there were charges on SMS received. I think they should have posted those charges on the sign-up page instead of someplace else.

Luckily for me, I have logged in for a long time.. Just too busy.

I joined SMS.AC about a year ago. After a week they start sending you sms like "duoia05 wants to be ur friend. check her profile at sms.ac". I've never asked for these dating sms, but moreover they cost money! I'm also sure that it is a fake profile tricking you into subscribing the dating service. So i hid my profile (costs money again), and a month later i start getting sms with "ag454 wants to add you to his friendslist" or sthg similar. So I deleted my account, an option which i had difficulties locating on their site...deliberitely?

This, like hi5.com, is a scam based scheme. It *phishes*; stealing your person information for profit.

I got stung by hi5, heh, and I've been kicking myself every day.

Luckily, it spammed several open source mailing lists, who, after I explained what had happened (which much grovelling), went forth to complain to everyone under the sun.

Complain to the FTC (spam/UCE/fraud) and get them in a shitload of trouble.

Fernando Rios Apr 09 2005

yeah, i got an email from what seemed to be one of my friend. I got a little suspicious when it said SHE was a male. So I entered my personal information, but when I got to the "enter your hotmail password" page, I typed "hi5 scam" in google, and found this page! I'm glad i ididn't join. you sould ALWAYS be suspicious of someone asking for your password!!!

sms.ac is literally committing daylight robbery from unsuspecting users. they are made to believe that signing up entails them to a free sms service. that was the reason i registered and there was something about activating the phone number b4 you can receive any messages. so i thought charges could not possibly be imposed when acvivation is not even masde yet. i then started receiving these text messgaes from strangers wanting to be your friends. i cancelled that subsequently as there were too many. THEN the bill came and i could kick myself for not cancelling sooner.

i called them up...toll free number 1800 807542 and i was informed that when u register u automatically subcribe to the premium package and that is charged. this is so billiant...at the end of the day u r to pay for something that u didnt even know that u subscribed to in the first place. nothing comes free.....i guess i forgot that.

chand Apr 15 2005

I got an email from my friend, asking to join the sms.ac. Since recently I am getting lot of spams, I thought of doing search online about sms.ac. I found your site and next thing was to delete the email.

bw Apr 18 2005

I got a message seemingly from a friend and almost signed up but did not. I not only checked with the friend but beofre I heard back from him rejectd the idea when I saw the site asks for my e-mail acct. with password and read the contract. Then I got a confirm SMS anyway, so I alerted my mobile provider. But will the firm turn down such spim profits? I wonder.

Paul Walsh Apr 19 2005

Sms.ac is a misleading rip-off... but is anyone going to do anything about it? Probably not I assume.

bob Apr 19 2005

i agree

Matt Apr 22 2005

I thank everyone for their advice, I too stopped when they asked for my hotmail password and I will try my best to inform all my friends that have subscribed to the service.

anndie Apr 26 2005

I think Sms.ac hacks into yahoo and hotmail messenger contact list and sends email to all of them. I never signed up but seemingly fed up of receiving invitations from different friends which they haven't sent. I hope someone gets a stop to all this menace

bob roberts Apr 28 2005

SMS.ac is really SCA.ms! I have heard from former employees (now being sued by SCA.ms!) that people are hired simply to send out messages and pretend to be flirtatious young mobile people. This is fraud, pure and simple. I'll be glad when this company is investigated and Poustage has his millions yanked away and thrown into "Pound-Me-In-The-Ass" federal prison!

Jeff Apr 29 2005

The CEO of SMS.ac is Mike Pousti. If you know Mike you know that he has zero ethics and is a sick manipulative prick.

Rules do not apply to this guy and his rich Doctor Daddy wishes he went to medical school like the rest of his family and did something even remotely valued. Breast implants for La Jolla debs is a noble calling!

Holly May 01 2005

I too have had problems with sms.ac.
They stole my hotmail password and sent messages to everybody. I have since cancelled my account with them and changed my hotmail password, so hopefully it will stop.
DO NOT SIGN UP FOR SMS.AC!!!!!!!!!!

Shelly May 02 2005

well, i was gonna join the stoopid thing but even trying to pick a name that hasnt been used, stressed the hell outta me!! I mean surely someone else hadnt picked 'sjkfhirueguhvui' as their user name already!!! Well, glad i didnt do it anyways by the sound of things...

May 09 2005

I first heard of these scammers in an email *supposedly* from a friend. After signing up I checked all the options to make sure I wasn't going to get charged for anything. That was about 6 months ago.

Two months ago I came to the USA from England, and brought my UK mobile with me. A week later, I started getting premium sms messages from them to my phone. I immediately replied with a "STOP" message. Guess what? Because I was in a different country, the messages wouldn't go through. I went to their website and deleted my account (which, strangely enough, informed me that I HAD chosen to recieve premium sms's). They FINALLY stopped sending me sms's about a week ago.

I now know why people like the idea of DDoSing websites...

Niklas Martinsson May 10 2005

It has reached Sweden too.
Does anyone know how much it cost to answer one of their;
"You will be charged 3.00 SEK for each..."
mesages?

Can you contact them at all?
/Niklas M

P May 11 2005

I can confirm that it has reached sweden, i had a run in with them about 5 months ago, i soon deleted all accounts and called my Mobile service provider and asked them to cut off ALL services from this company, i found out they were using a Norwegian company as som kind of front to collect the bills from my MSP.

Then yesterday i got a msg from them again!
Saying i was subscribed and every msg will cost 3.00 SEK and stops after 500 have been sent!

This is the worst kind of scam company ive seen.

charlie curilan May 12 2005

SMS.AC is definitely fraudulent and should be sued. So far, i estimate that they have cheated me of at least 400 euros. The first time i suspected that they were dodgy was when the "stop" option didn't work. I would send the "stop" message to a number and the message would not be sent, the number probably doesn't even exist. At one point they had started sending me paid services. The worse part is that they have made it virtually impossible to cancel one's account. It's difficult to log on (i.e. they tell you your password is incorrect) and when you ask for your password to be sent via email either they deny they have that email address registered or that an email has been sent while no email actually arrives. My next step is to end my contract with my current company, and ask for a new one, or, cross over to a company that have safety measures against such companies.

Sam Watson May 17 2005

Those of you who feel you were mislead when signing up for SMS.ac and were charged for something you feel you didn't opt in for should contact rthompson@cmwlaw.net. Thompson is the lead counsel for a class action suit against Jamster.com (a similar situation) and is surely qualified to handle this type of case.

Notice that the cell phone companies are also named in the suit. This could be a big money lawsuit. Isn't it about time you got justice? You may be eligable for your money back plus damages if you have proof of the billing in the form of your mobile phone bill. All it takes is one brave and serious individual to lead the case and the attorney will take the case in exchange for a part of the settlement. In other words it will not cost you a penny more than a few phone calls to make a big difference putting an end to this scam. Also all other people in the planet who were also wrongly billed will also be able to recover their losses thanks to you. Something to think about anyway.

Pouky May 19 2005

crapcrapcrap ! that's the only thing I gotta say about them. I registered and then closed my account after realizing that it was just useless and expensive. Now, I'm always connected as online on the messenger, people can contact me but I'm not registered to sms.ac anymore !!! After browsing their website for 30mn I never found any email address where to contact them. Greu !

ryt May 20 2005

Hi,

We all received theses bloody SMS.AC spams. I am offering simple solutions to fight back: Someone is actually sending them on SMS.AC's behalf and another comapny is hosting their website.

1. Blacklist sms.ac spam servers:
Go to spamcop.net and report all mail sent by "your friends" as spam using sms.ac (Very quick once you’ve created you’re account). This will not hurt your friends only the server that sends the email that is rented by sms.ac. Future emails from theses servers will be blocked. (SMS.ac tend to have this problem often and change the company that sends their emails) Let's make them change even more often!

2. Write to the company that hosts the sms.ac website:
I wrote to this company and asked them to stop doing business with sms.ac. They never answered. I would recommend you guys to do the same! They might make a move then. Also let everybody know that this company is working with sms.ac (Bad publicity!).
Hosting company:
Cardi.net
8913 Complex Drive
San Diego, CA 92123
Toll Free : 888.221.5902
To send them an email go to the following page
http://cari.net/contact/index.php

Cheers, good luck in cooping with these terrible emails. Let’s get back to sms.ac!

This SMS.AC company really suck !
It charges directly to your mobile phone account when you send the 4th messages out.
Beware !

Taya Jun 02 2005

This is absolutely rediculous...I too got an email from a friend of mine, so I signed up (SPECIFICALLY BECAUSE IT SAID IT DID NOT COST ANYTHING) I just receintly got a message saying that I owe $5! That is absolutely obsurd there must be some way to petition this company out of business and to have them give back all the money they have obtained illegally!

Help! what can we do?

Richard Jun 07 2005

sms.ac is causing me problems, I have recieved a lot of unsolicited text messages which cost me 50p a time on my payg mobile, I am having trouble stopping them any advice would be welcome. Do NOT sign up for SMS.AC

Cameron Jun 15 2005

Well, some friends of mine got emails from these guys and signed up for it... ill have to tell them that it is really a scam! Thanks guys!

Linda Jun 16 2005

I too signed up because two of my friends signed on. Later I learned that one of my friends didn't even know how they got my e-mail address to send to me because she didn't give it to them. I am being charged each month on my mobile phone for their messages that I promptly delete. How do you get to them to cancel their service? I have been to every web page and each one requires a name and password (which I don't have).

John Jun 23 2005

I signed up for SMS.ac a while ago - I read the site terms of service and check my profile settings to ensure I was not signed up to anything I didn't want (many companies have default setting to their favor - heck, that is the power of spam ... err, marketing) - and have not had a single issue or falsely sent message or charge.

to me the SMS.ac service is okay and has some value - however, I did not provide them with a bunch of personal or other information either. based upon the above experiences sounds like most of the complaints are due to the errors by the person sitting in front of their computer (don't want spam don't give out your information or get better friends so they don't give out your information)

lesson to most on this thread - read the terms of service (don't just click OK) and check the preference settings (news flash: companies are out to make money!)

Agree with John Jun 24 2005

From the referenced link above: "Michael did get a message on his cell phone warning him of the charges and there is a cost warning on the fine print in the commercials."

What is all the crying and lawsuit-chasing about in this thread!? You people posting are simply displaying self-acknowledgment of being stupid - read the terms and don't give out your personal information (or if you do, don't get mad because you didn't read the fine print)

Editor note

Just for your information, the two above comments were made by the same person. That's great--I'm all about communication, but don't lie about who you are. No matter who it is (perhaps just a rabid fan) be honest!

John and Agree with John Jun 24 2005

I am a "rabid fan" but not hiding, my name is John and I do agree with myself ;-)

btw, talk about privacy invasion - please remove my IP address from this public forum - I did not agree to such terms - the only visible term is that postings will be pre-screened for spam.

humm, makes me wonder about if MobileTracker is pulling a scam / misrepresentation.

andy Jun 25 2005

i am a user of sms.ac... so far i dont have any problems.. like some people said, they send invitation to your friends who is in your contact list.. its not happen to me... i already use sms.ac almost 2 or 3 years(not so sure).. so its hard for me to tell its a scam or not although aLOT of people say its a scam.... =\

pissed off and ready for legal action Jun 25 2005

I can't believe this sms.ac I have business colleagues in my email address book and now people constantly receive emails from me that I DID NOT authorize.
Help I want it to stop.

........... For your information, I never signed up with sms.ac. I just started getting billed for sms.ac text messages on my AT&T bill. However, I never received any text messages and I don't text message anyone. So explain to me why I am stupid again?

Oliver Jul 13 2005

Seriously sms.ac are complete crooks.

Here is an article I wrote on it
http://boxover.swazz.org/whysmsacsucks.html

Zarni Jul 19 2005

I got some invitations and went and checked it out... It's kinda ql. I met some hot chicks. It seems to me that only people in US have problems with this service. If you don't activate your phone ... no problem. And my hotmail account... I use it just for signing up to stupid services that I don't trust, so hotmail gets the nice spam, and I don't care.

But sms.ac would be a nice service if they wouldn't be gready. It's designed like a slotmachine. You never know what you are actualy looking at!

Peace

Joanna Jul 20 2005

I was looking on textmefree.com and because i have an account on sms.ac i checked out this link.I had no idea about this.Because i have prepaid credit,i tought my roomate was stealing the phone and sending messages. Now i realise that it's their fault!I want to delete my account, but hell,it just won't log in!

ielle77 Aug 12 2005

Ugh i feel sick now. I don't think I've been charged while using SMS.AC but i worry about my friend overseas whom i was texting. first off, what's all this crap that we in the states can't text england (or at least we can't if we're on verizon wireless). Someone smarter please explain to me how i can call England, but i can't text england??? Anyway that was what drove me to Sms.ac and all was great until a week ago. Suddenly i mailed my friend and BAM i get a text back saying they're charging me 25 cents. I know that doesn't sound much but that's in addition to the five cents my company charged me for recieving their junk. I'm going to tell them stop all and find some where new to play. Anyone have any suggestions for a nice, FREE web to mobile text message site that won't suddenly start charging you and yet claim to be free? I don't mind pop ups, those can be ignored.

Joe Aug 20 2005

I have been using SMS.ac for a year. At first it was free. It workes really well. Then I started to recieve messsages from people wanting to be my friend. My mobile company started charging me for all the incoming texts. It was adding up to a few bucks a month and only getting worse. I hid my identity and stopped getting the unwanted texts. Now I am seeing $0.25 for sending messages. Its time to find a truely free SMS provider.

gargsgirl202 Sep 01 2005

I kept getting these text's and didnt and dont have a clue who or how... but i noticed on my call bill that there was over 20$$ worth of texy charges just by them sending them to ME, i have never replied to them except when my cell provider told me to text "STOP" to them, well that didn't work so i tried calling and that hasnt worked either... this was a week ago and since then i have recived another 22 text messages... does anyone have any advice on how to stop this?????????????

Aaron Sep 02 2005

This time, my suspicious nature paid off. When sms.ac page asked for a hotmail address, I opened an other browser window and set myself up with a brand new, address-book-empty, hotmail address.

I found out something was a amiss when the sms.ac asked me to enter a user name. EVERY USER NAME I TRIED HAD BEEN "TAKEN". So I tried the most ridiculous, unlikely-to-taken of usernames. ALL TAKEN!!! Which was IMPOSSIBLE. If the usernames I tried were all taken then THERE MUST BE SEVERAL TRILLION subscribers for this service--MORE THAN ALL THE PEOPLE THAT WOULD HAVE EVER LIVED!!!! How do certain people get away with scams like this? Must well-connected, well protected people. People that has the US court system in their pockets.

Danny Sep 19 2005

John and agree with John may be Micheal Poustis himself posting. Form what I understand of the chap, it would not be below him to pull such stunts, posting as others. The bit claiming about the invasion of privacy (trying to turn the tables) is a little characteristic of his style, and much like the threatening letters he has sent in response to legal challenges.

Most people back off, he is a bit of a master, but mark my words, he is pulling an illegal scam, and one day he will be caught out for it when he charges the wrong important person for a text message they never agreed to receive. FYI - a not insignificant number of people receiving the rubbish never actually signed up for it themselves.

Umbi Sep 24 2005

Someone should supply information on how to get off their 'so and so is inviting you to blah' list. I get about 3 of these text messages every day. The worst is when they wake me up when they come at night.

I know i stopped the registration when it asked for my hotmail password.

Does anyone know if they get your cell phone number from someone elses hotmail contact list. Because i know the person who did complete the signup, has me on their contact list, and I have my cell phone number listed in my hotmail information? Or was i stupid enough to supply it when sms.ac asked for it during signup?

Anyway. Someone should post this information and put it at the top of this and other lists.

1) how to easily cancel your sms.ac
2) how to get your cell phone number taken off their list.

Foobar Oct 05 2005

Fellas,

Rip-Off-Report thinks SMS.AC are good guys because of all the fake rebuttals they get. Instead of posting to various forums, please express your opinions here:

The public needs to know about this huge scam operation.

meh Oct 06 2005

i get spammed by this pathetic site on a DAILY basis from friends who have either listed me, or have had their contact list leached. Reporting their address to spam companies seems to do sweet FA and i'm just about fedup of this sodding company.

Benjamin Oct 18 2005

This SMS.ac is FXXKing bull shit.
Here is my story. I received a bill from B-Mobile one day, and found out I have some 3PartyPromo charges, each about 50c, and I have got 5, so $2.50.
I called up B-Mobile, and they said it has nothing to do with them, and they referred me to 5thFinger. I called 5th Finger, they said sms.ac leased their line and sent me the messages.
The message that I got (everything) is as follow:
blazeginger (Female Age:25) is inviting you to be her friend. Reply Yes-347 or No-347.

Wayne Oct 20 2005

Holy Crap . I've signed up but luckily my service provider is Vodafone and currently the site does not support it so i don't have my Cell number registered on SMS.AC
Nearly fell for the "free sms" tag line .

Mazza Oct 25 2005

I didn't even properly sign up, and every single person on my contacts list seems to be getting invitations to join sms.ac from me. that CAN'T be legal. i tried unsubscribing, and it seems to have worked, but i couldn't for the moment definitively say that it has.

yvonne Oct 30 2005

it is the worst site ever! they kept sending me so many emails, then they sent me text messages of strangers that want to be my friend.. this was like 5 times a day and i was getting charged

DONT SIGN UP!!! if u did.. CLOSE YOUR ACCOUNT!

carlos r guzman Nov 04 2005

Hey! Michael Dickhead Pousti's email is mpousti@corp.sms.ac Drop him a line! See how HE feels getting thousands of unwanted emails! DON'T tell them you got it from me!

natasha Dec 09 2005

hi please join me to sms.ac.

hina Dec 16 2005

hi

Mike B. Dec 20 2005

SMS.ac is an Absolute SCAM!
dont read any further call your Mobile Carrier and request to speak with VP of customer care. The carriers get 50% of the charges that sms.ac charges you and if you in any way shape or form give them or someone else gives them your cell # YOU WILL BE CHARGED an average of $20-25 per month.

Frank C. Dec 26 2005

Signed up for a new Rogers (Canada) cellphone account a month ago. Huge $26 surprise in my first phone bill traceable back to sms.ac. Rogers refused to help and said I had to cancel "my account" myself. Funny, never signed up for one. Text messaging had been declined on my account. Couldn't get sms.ac by phone or by internet. Finally yelled at the Rogers rep and he got them himself. I pointed out that despite Rogers' protestations, the "preminum charge" appeared on their bill with their approval. Seems the previous owner of this cellphone number (three months or more ago) was a subscriber and sms.ac just keep sending the messages and bills no matter what. So, Rogers assigned me a dirty number. Got the charges reversed. I can't imagine how any reputable cellphone company would align themselves with such shady characters.
Something has to be done.

L-dub Dec 27 2005

We are being spammed by SMS.ca on our company cell phone! It is irritating.
I am looking for a way to involve the Attorney General.
No one in my organization wants these kinds of "friends". Even if they did, they would use their personal phones.
This phone lives in a locked file cabinet when it is not out in the field. I would certainly like to know how they got this number.

julianne Jan 02 2006

hi, i like most people fell for this scam and at first i was ok with paying for my horoscope but then i kept gettin do u want 2 b my friend 4 times a day and it got 2 a point where i found out i was being charged for them im i being in australia was on a pre paid account so i stopped it. i only joined coz i saw my younger brother join. now im glad i stopped it man its such a hassle when u dont have spare money for this sort of crap!

confused Jan 18 2006

I visitted sms.ac
There is now a box to send a free text message.
I entered a friends phone number and a message "Hi, just testing if this service works"
Does this mean that they are likely to start getting unsolicited SMS messages and be charged for them?

JJ Jan 18 2006

SMS is really a scam, we already deleted our account but they still charge us for at least Canadian $10 even without using the service. They should be punished as well as Rogers for letting them do this. And Rogers said they cannot remove it from their bill..that is really strange..

Matt Hunt Jan 28 2006

A friend of mine is filing charges against them in court for over 3600 unauthorized text messages she got sent. If anyone else is interested, please contact me at visibleunderwater@gmail.com

Alex Feb 03 2006

I was woken up to the perils of sms.ac a long time ago when I foolishly signed up... Luckily shortly after I cancelled my pay-as-you go mobile & went contract so never actually got charged but ended up with all my friends moaning at me saying i was spamming them.

Now half of them are spamming me with it & new friends I make I warn them ASAP not to go near the site...

I'm curious - any hackers out there ever tried to bring it down ?

I don't know why they haven't already been brought down. They're thieves & deserve no more than this. Ok Ok so it's evil to get to their level by "hacking" them but maybe a taste of their own medicine would shut them up.

Perhaps a massive DDoS attack is necessary.....

inez nelson Feb 06 2006

dont like sms just a pain in the ... especial early in the morning not even a waked and some ring me just not fun i want out

arj Feb 09 2006

Someone has hacked my pass and I want it back for this e-mail (tina_viki7@hotmail.com) pls help me

Mr T Feb 27 2006

I have been looking for a service like this
all day, I wanna sign someone up who has been
stealing stuff from me. Payback time, this looks
like about the worst scam ever to do with SMS,
this will be perfect as long as they have not been shut down! Please, let them trade a few more weeks!

alfred Mar 06 2006

I not only received junk from SMS.AC my Canadian wireless provider, Rogers charged me for it. I called their customer service line and not only complained, but got them to call SMS.AC to block my number from futher texts and had them reverse the charges.

I reasonsed firmly that 1) I did not sign up for this service with Rogers and they were the ones billing me for it so it is their responsibility to clear it up and not me and 2) that if they disagreed with that for them to fax me a copy of a signed agreement from me where I agreed on this service.

From my readings on the Internet SMS.ac appears to engage in many fraudelent practices. However, mobile providers are guilty as well for not protecting their customers. How can Rogers bill somebody for a "premium" service without a service agreement? They are just as guilty as SMS.ac as they must make money as well. And this certainly is a cozy arrangement by both to increase revenue. Roger's collects money for a service that is "outside" of their control. Meanwhile, SMS.ac randomly sends texts to Roger's customers. Since charges are usually $0.25-$1.00 / month, most people wouldn't bother complaining. How much "extra" revenue they must get from this? Plenty.

Somebody should take these people to court!

bart Mar 07 2006

I deleted my account on sms.ac about a year ago. Now, a year later, they start tot send me sms messages again!
WTF?!

john Mar 20 2006

sms.ac- complete scam... stay away from it!!!!!stay away!

Alex Mar 21 2006

I'm reading all of these replies and can relate to almost all of them. I recieved an e-mail from a friend and signed up, then later learned that my friend hadn't even heard about SMS.AC. When I signed up, it was SOOO not clear that I would be charged for anything, much less .30 a pop for some random text messages. The messages were annoying, before I knew I was paying for them. Kat Apr 03 2006

I joined because I had an email from a friend. Before long I had loads of messages saying katie 21F would like to be your friend. Etc. I didn't know I was being charged for these messages and regularly got 5 or 6 day. I just ignored them thinking it was "just" junk mail. It was only when I received an astronomical phone bill that I realised what was going on. I have now received a partial refund, but am deeply unhappy and can't believe this company is legal.

bailey Apr 09 2006

i got a new phone from verizon a week ago. every day since then i have recieved an unwanted text message from different users at sms.ac. verizon said i can either change my phone number (no gaurentee it wont happen again) or block the messages. either way it costs money. lame.

Terry Apr 13 2006

My wife has been getting SMS.AC spam for weeks now, due to a tainted phone number assigned to us by Rogers Wireless when we got our new cell phone. To get anything done at Rogers, we've had to escalate past the entry-level help desk. To date, some of the Rogers staff say they can block this, other say they can't but at least they've added around $120 in credits to make up for our losses.

How can they legally bill our credit cards without any authorization? Any smart lawyer want to start a class action suit against Rogers?

Mike Apr 20 2006

Hey Everyone,

I actually had a similar issue but when contacting SMS.ac directly they refunded me and apologized with no questions asked. It surprised me. I think they are trying to really turn the image around and it sounds like they are doing a good job of it. They claim to have 50 million users so I guess you can't please everyone.

This was actually my carriers fault but they still refunded me.

I guess the message is to not react if things like this happen. Try to contact them directly. It worked for me and I have no more concerns.

Cleo Apr 23 2006

I downloaded horoscopes from ASTRO2 and i want them to stop sending me them, i also downloaded jokes from FUN2 i dont want them either, i get them daily.... how do u make them stop?

Tina May 10 2006

Hey Everyone,

How much you wanna bet that the post from "Mike" on 4/20/06 was written by the SCA.ms CEO, Mike Pousti?!? Trying to change their image around? Maybe he should stop sleeping with his employees and figure out a legitimate business plan first!!

Lerato May 18 2006

this is so true!! it has long reached South Africa too.. i have been so ripped off. i finally got unsubscribed which ws kinda difficult to do!! They should have legal action taken against them for ripping people off like that.

Concezione Jun 05 2006

These SMS.ac...who in this world are they?
How did they get my number? Who gave them permission to use my account to make 167 calls....50 cents each....
They are CROOKS, I will report them to the BBB and wherever I have to take them I will.
My attorneys have been investigating already and they are full of BS

Kim Jun 16 2006

Yes, SMS.AC is a scam! My friend used work at there. They cheat they own employees as well.

vig Jun 21 2006

I would bust a cap in their asses if i see anyone who is part of sms.ac group who invented this scams. I get like 5-6 sms-es each day, I knew sms.ac is charging for incoming texts. I haven't recharge my phone for almost a year cause of this bullshet. Is they anything can be done to stop other than changing number or service provider?

Benji Jul 18 2006

I just filed a complaint with the Better Business Bureau in their nearby area of San Diego BBB. I mentioned what happened with me, and how I received unsolicited text messages from this company after signing up for their service (that I was charged a premium for).

I am really considering legal action. Though I'd only do it if I could build a class action suit.

sut Jul 22 2006

For uk users - to stop receiving the texts
call your cellphone service provider, they should be able to stop it - but they can't help you with a refund. For that you need to contact sms.ac direct
(0870 766 3320 uk or 00800722 03000 us - weedays only)
Try ensure you know how much the refund should be before you contact them.
If they won't refund you - contact the premuim rate services regulator http://www.icstis.org.uk/ - on 01494 750 500

Matt Aug 15 2006

I've been getting messages from them on my mobile and I'm assuming I'm paying for those messages to be delievered to me. I did not authorise that to happen.

I'm going to warn them right now, if it happens again. If it happens again they'll regret it.

They are crinimals. They don't deserve to run a business like that.

lasha Aug 16 2006

i got the idea of signing up from my friend...the problem that i encountered with the sms.ac, is that i cannot sign in or log in any more after a couple of days of opening my home page..................

timothy schouten Sep 12 2006

i did not have any problem with SMS.AC.
when i signed in i never gave my cellnr.
one could avoid to do that.
i am signed up for more than a year also with another profile. never had problems, you just had to sign in a certain way to avoid giving phonenr.
last 2 months was a problem that all the mesages between profiles disappeared.
i asked them if they could repair it and i got an answer they were working on it.
but since a week i cant sign in anymore and get the following message :
The page you are looking for is currently unavailable. The Web site might be experiencing technical difficulties, or you may need to adjust your browser settings
did someone got their server down ? or am i blocked off ? can someone still get in sms.ac ?

bill Sep 15 2006

another case of something looking too good to be true, i benefitted from using an old payg cellphone number and creating a new hotmail account to register so my own precious contacts didn't get spammed. never got any mobile requests so didnt pay them owt.had many free sms messages abroad, unfortunately my better half wasnt so lucky and received a number of 50p messages to her phone on different account. its amazing there are people on there with 4000+ friends - do they have nothing better to do or what? their phones must be glued to their hands and costing them a fortune.

Teresa Sep 15 2006

SMS.AC is stealing from me through Verizon Wireless. Verizon should protect it's customers from fraudulent scammers. Verizon said I had to pay them (Verizon) for services not rendered (erroneous SMS.AC premium downloads)and go to SMS.AC for a refund. What?! I have to pay Verizon to pay the thief and then ask for my money back from the theif and hope that I get it?? Shame on you - Verizon Wireless!

I never initiated anything of the sort. I hope the FCC does not twiddle their thumbs over this one.

Amish Sep 17 2006

I signed up a few years ago, and lately (in the past few months) I've also been getting about 5-7 text messages a day (Sometimes 3 at a time). I didn't realise either I've been getting charged for these, until I noticed on my recent bill the high usage charges for 'premium' text msg charges. What BS.

Couldn't for the life of me figure out on their site how to cancel my account, so I looked at the contact us page, got their phone number, and called them up direct. I spoke with a girl at the Canada number called 'lisa' and she said she would cancel it. I'm actually quite surprised that I was able to get a live person on a sunday. So she said they will stop after 24hrs, we'll see what happens.

LawrenY Oct 06 2006

Help! I am from Malaysia and there is this "4000" shortcode sender who keeps sending messages to my handphone and deducting money from my account in the process. I believe it is done systematically because almost few days the message will come in - sometimes as many as three times in a row.
It carries a message as if Celcom is reminding its users to use it's 013/019/014 numbers correctly.
How do I stop such calls? Most of all how do Iget the authorities to bring the culprit to book?
Thank you.

Euywein Oct 19 2006

can i know how to cancel my account..
pls sms to me thx...

GetStuffed Oct 24 2006

I've found out how to remove this supposedly after a lengthy chat with my mobile carrier. I said basically show me where I said I ok'd the charges via the mobile phone and contract I had with them and they offered a $2.00 credit for the month.

Well the "marketing promotions company" running this in Australia is 5th Finger. Quick Google and says they have been bought out by Ninemsn.com.au so the biggest is now a spammer?

Ring in Aus 02 8307 7830

Booshka Oct 29 2006

Use to work for them. Their taking a lot of money from a lot of unsuspecting people. Stay away!!!
