Wow, that's a long list of features. Especially for a phone from Verizon Wireless. Great too see. Bluetooth *and* removable storage. Don't they know that you'll be able to transfer your own ringtones over without making them any money?

Verizon is famous for locking us out from certain features that other carriers would allow. Verizon is anything but stupid. They would lose millions if they allowed us to get ringtones and pictures easily without using Get It Now. Of course there will be ways around it, but that can sometimes be dangerous. But I live for danger :)

hi im a long haul trucker with verizon being my wireless provider. i currently have the motorola v710 and its best feature is the mini sd card.

im glad the lg vx9800 carries that as well. my biggest advantage is dumping photos and now soon to be mp3 music to my phone to listen to my music at the docks waiting for customers too load or unload.

on dispatch angle my company uses qualcomm and aether mobile satelite communications..like 2 way instant text only instant messages. but now i could have a pocket email device to email dispatcher and other company employees without getting in truck and walking back and forth to the truck and customer relaying each message.

i would also like transfering word doc.s by dumping to card (not being viewable by phone sad) but then off loading via usb to other computer to avoid airtime charge on email. as for pix with out getting charged by verizon here is how:
step 1 take photo with camera and save it...but lets say you want your favorite celeb...say britney spears...not mine but most know of her, go on internet find photo, right click save as
" save as..." choose .jpeg upload pix from my pictures then find it on phone and set as wall paper. i do that with my v 710 it supports jpeg also.

my email question is this: is verizons phone accessed email done as pop 3 so i can access it from my laptop? i have cingular internet with yahoo web based email and if i get a vz email on phone if its pop 3 can i fwd it to yahoo and see on laptop later?

Yep, this supports POP3. But I hate that the wireless connectivity to a PC/laptop for synchronization will be a monthly fee. Guess I'd be using that USB cable instead. I much rather get the XV6600 (PocketPC) phone that is a PDA with bluetooth and wi-fi enabled. I'd just hate lugging that 7lb beast everywhere I go.

Yes, Works with Wirelesssync aka Intelisync.... Also will sync with the computer, don't ask me how haven't bought it yet but i have demoed it for a company I work for.

Just got this phone and it's pretty cool. Here's my review on it.

Positives: mini-sd card, full qwerty kb, good quality sound, excelent resolution / color screens, easy menu system, voice recognition dial without training, Vcast (not updated enough though for costing $14.99 a month), nicest camera I have used on a cell, can use movies as wallpaper.

Negatives: you cannot use mp3s as ringtones (even using the mobile17 smashworld site!!! THIS REALLY PISSED ME OFF!!!, instant messengers haven't been improved upon (faster only because of the EVDO crap. Why the hell have a keyboard like this without improved messaging apps), web browsing is faster, but still limited and runs out of memory on most sites (another feature that should have been improved upon), speaker phone only works when the phone is open (rather bulky to do that all the time), not bluetooth 2.0, was misled about email setup (ends up being $19.99 a month to sync up remotely and can only be done with your computer being left on), pricey, certain vcast content costs too much and needs to be restreamed every time even after u pay for it, I'll repeat the no mp3 ringtones thing again cuz of how pissed off I am.

Course they want to make money on get it now tones, but most of them suck!! I listen to electronic music, drum n bass, UK Hardcore etc. I'm never gonna find that on there. :( Also vcast / the phone uses windows media for streaming. I hope someone hacks it and finds a way to stream audio to the phone. :( I went from a Moto v710 to this. The only thing better on this phone is the camera, the keyboard, and the screen quality... and I guess the slightly faster IM'ing. It's not worth dropping 299 - 399 on this phone if you already have a v710 or equivelant. VZW could have done so much more with this phone. Email integration w/ attachment support, real IM'ing, better web browser, mp3 tones, etc. Anyway... that's enough of my rambling. :)

To get the Mp3s to play off the card, do a format card, it will ask for your lockout code, and then the card will format, when you look at the card there will be folders there now, one says mp3 or music, cant remember which, now the deal is to put the mp3s in the root of that folder, not in folders, then they will be selectable.

seems a bit pricey to me, especially if you are a verizon customer already and can't upgrade!! Verizon customers should get some breaks.

Yes it will work with the 1G MiniSD, I ordered mine from the Scan Disk site. On MP3's make sure your songs are in MP3 format and not any other format and also make sure you put the songs in the folder listed as My_Mp3. I did not have to format the card or input a lockout code. I am also having a problem on how to view an image or video that I put on the MiniSD. The folders are there, but I am missing something.Is the card for MP3's only?

I am having problems with the MP3 player, too. Every time I go to the player, my phone reboots. I loaded songs after initializing it, and files show up via the card reader, but I can't open the folder on my phone because it reboots as soon as I press 'my mp3's'. Any advice? Thanks!

one thing I found very annoying about this phone is that it takes work to find things. I have found a program called "River Past Video Cleaner" that can convert video files from your computer into the 3GPP2 format. Then with a MiniSD, you can transfer them on to the phone and watch it! You can download the trial version but it will leave a watermark on the video, although the program can be cracked to remove it.

I was having problems playing songs once I downloaded them to the card. I shortened the name and now they work!!

You need to buy the MobileMate Reader, they have them there at the verizon store or you can order it online directly through SanDisk. I'm also having problems putting songs onto the miniSD from Windows Media Player. Only some of the songs show up on my phone.

Couple things, ive had the phone for alittle over a month. Verizon techs dont know anything. Bitpim is dope.....you need a usb data cable which even verizon doesnt have yet but the cable for the vx8100 will work the same for your 9800

does anyone know if you can completly fill the gig card with mp3's ive only been able to get 350 M or so. plus i get many "read file errors" and am forced to delete the track off the phone even after trying to shorten the file name

first off to those that can't get music to "sync" with windows media player... wtf are you doing? when you open the card in your mobile mate it has the folders already there. that is of course that you put the card into your phone before your computer. then just put your mp3s in the "mp3" folder. ***note you can't use protected mp3's from apple or those other money grubbing companies. so be illegal and get the real thing. and use bitpim or whatever its called. works wonders for your 9800.

I have had this phone for a few weeks now. The BitPim software allows you to hack and create your own ringtones very easily. I do this via bluetooth (you can get a dongle for $20 which is much cheaper than buying those cables and software). Basically, the BitPim software makes it easier to do just about any kind of file storage and manipulation on the phone. The biggest letdown is the web browser.

I have a complaint about this phone. I got my first one in Nov. now on New Year's Eve it locked up. I was able to get to the verizon store before it closed. Since I had insurance they gave me a brand new one. Just that they couldn't transfer the info. since the old phone whouldn't start. I had to reprogram all the numbers in it, re download the ringtones, games. Now I've had my second phone for about 10 days and the C key sticks the reception really sucks. I took it back yesterday the Verizon store to see if I could get the new treo 700w. They said no since the go off the orginal date of purchase back in Nov. So they will be sending be a new one (the third one) via Fed ex. I would have just much rather had the treo 700w and paid the extra. They did say since it's my 3rd one if this one doesn't work I can upgrade to the treo 700w so deep down I'm hopping this one doesn't work to well either.

Ok so i read the whole page i appreciate the info on bitpim. But I'm on my second phone. I downloaded 3d extreme air on the first phone and about 5 seconds in to game play it was resetting. Now i have the second phone and having the same problem. Any body else have this problem. p.s. Circuit city has a usb mini storage drive that the msd card slides in to and it was only 19.99

Downloading to the 9800 using a USB cable is faster than using a bluetooth dongle. It's also cheaper to buy the cable. I got a cable from ebay for around $10 (shipping included) and it came with a car charger.

Did the second one the exact same way, now I cant look at "my ringtones" because it keeps resetting. Any input or will the new software fix this also or did I screw this phone up to?

Ditkaschewinggum: erightsoft's super video converter will convert computer movies to .3g2 format which makes for nice stuff you can generally watch on yer vx9800. http://www.erightsoft.com/STcD1.htm, tho it might have to be downloaded from some generic (or germanic?) download site like where I got it. try a few bitrate settings, cause the default is only 90 but the phone can handle higher. Place the converted 3g2 files in the my_flix folder in the minisd card. BTW, If you're transferring mp3s, put them in the my_mp3 folder in the minisd card.

Charles:of course it will cost you extra. 5$ a month plus airtime (meaning it will cost you by counting against your minutes) to access it via the mobileweb only plan-- OR 15$ a month with no airtime charges via the Vcast highspeed evdo plan. you can access gmail either waythrough their mobileweb program by way of phone's web browser "mobile web email". I don't know from experience about this wireless sync (up to 10mb attachment) email option, or whether it even works with stuff like transferring word doc attachments to the memory card, though it sounds more blackberry-ish, and I think I remember reading that it cost somethign like 15-20$ or something...??? yeah 20$ I just checked. I've decided that since I don't live in a highspeed area, and in reality I need to receive slowly (and multipagedly) presented text only emails on the road only say ~1 hour every month that vcast package isn't worth it for me.

something else called Email Executive is also available, 5$ a month, but I know even less about that.

recording video is fun for 15 seconds. taking pictures is fun. if something is close-ish set it the switch near the lens to person, if far-ish, set it to flower. you can have the phone (in computerized talk) say the name and show a picture of the person calling you when they call you, say verizon wireless at random intervals, and make some other noises when it does other stuff.

setting repeating calendar appointments is awkward but possible, by making it repeat every day (or every week or month) until a certain end date, then navigating to the dates that you don't actually have the appointment and erasing that one appointment, ****though I'm not sure if the alarm goes off for any repetitions after the original entry!!! use the alarm clock function to wake up. I was almost late to work 2x (mega lame) :(

you can change your homepage in the WAP browser by pressing menu 0 000000 8 selecting homepage etc... google.com works as one, though mail.yahoo.com does not. yahoo mobile mail is available, but I can't figure out how now that I've changed my homepage ;)

my source at lg claims that only 50% of a 1GB minisd card will function, though mine seems to be functioning fine so far at 75%. However, almost all of that came from my computer, not photos and videos from that phone, which might make some difference, I guess.

i have yet to get the business card reader to work, but hey you can't have everything.

charles: just realized maybe you're looking for pop3 mail like you can get in thunderbird???? my suggestions work for yahoo mail and gmail which are webmails with WAP compatable sites. you might need something like the wireless sync for pop3 mail, though like I said, i don't know much about it. there may be other possibilities as well.

No, I'm running Windows XP. I have the phone's setting to USB and have downloaded the VX9800 driver from the BitPin site, but right now the cable is nothing but a USB charging station. Is the phone set up in such a way that you need to buy the Wireless Sync in the phone for Bitpim to work with it?

I just want to get everybody (as many as i can) opinion on this phone. i like the key board for text messages a long w/ all the other stuff, but my main thing is the phone - i'm wondering how the reception is - i notice that it does not have an exterior antenna, i had a Blk Berry which didn't have an exterior antenna and the reception was lousy. Does the fact that it doesn't have an antenna affect the number of "bars" you get or the amount of drop calls and if u can get reception everywhere. Like i said my main thing is the phone.

i got a 512 mb mini sd card and soon found out that you needed a USB hook up for it to work. i bought one for 9.99 and then after receving it fond out my printer has a mini SD port in it ...woops
so if you have a photo printer check if it has a mini SD port before buying the bluetooth or USB hook up.......ALSO i am having problems with the mp3's i have got them on the card succesfully but when i try to play them i get a "FILE READ ERROR" really frustrating....ANY ONE HAVE ANY ADVICE?!?!?

i've never had a problem with the signal and i work all over ne fla. As far as the mp3's go, you have to make sure the songs are in the "my mp3's" folder. Also i bought a adapter for the mini sd that turns it into an sd card. That allows me to insert it into the sd slot on my computer as well as use it in my camera. And i'm actually typing this on my phone. It autocaps the first letter of the sentence, but i'm too lazy to capitalize proper nouns using the shift key.

I need help! I bought a 2gig sd card, and even with a software update (now V02), my phone will not read the card. It recognizes that a card is there, just will not access it. Both LG and Verizon told me that with the update, it would recognize the 2gig card (the 8100 had the same issue) I did the update, but nothing. I know the card works, because I can access it from my computer. When I try to format, it fails....can anyone help????

The phone only support a 1G card max. Sorry :-(. Has anyone found a true USB Driver? The one that I have converts the USB to Serial port which makes uploading and downloading files with BitPIM really slow. You can use BitPIM and the USB cable though to upload and download mp3's as well as make your mp3's your ringers which is cool.....just too slow.

Just got my bluetooth to work on my LG-VX9800. Guys I gotta tell you, that BitPIM software is da bomb. I mean, I could have never imagined being on verizon network and be able to have basically any ringtone on my phone that I want. Just download a song or any audio and send to your phone... how simple and easy... cheers to whoever created that software and made our lives easier and more enjoyable :)

Once I put my SD card in the phone, it locks my ability to take pictures and video. Anyone else experience this problem?

hey guys, i have a ? about bitpim, im using a Verizo Mobile Card Reader/writer (where you put the card (miniSD 256MB) into the reader and hook it up to the computer thru USB, when i try to put the ringtones into the memory card, it will not detect it, i dunno if im doing it the right way or what?...please help...thanks

I have to say the VX9800 was worth the $320 bux from verizon for the phone, including $35 setup fee, and $50 for 350 easypay prepaid minutes. With the prepaid plan you get web access for $1 a day of web use too which I think is a pretty good deal since you can use it as a wireless modem as well. Although broadband access then costs an additional $60/month. The Mobile Office kit for the usb cable is $40 and the 1 Gig SD card is $80.

I just got the lg 9800 and a 1gb mini sd card and a card reader/writer. When i put music on the card is there a way i can have them be my ringtones? verison charges too much for ringers.

Actually you can use mp3 as ringtones. You have to use bitpim, convert your mp3's to ringtones and then add the updated ringtones back to your phone. I have done several times. The same goes for wallpaper..and sound events. If you want more detail on how you can do this email me and I will be more than happy to help you out. First things first though, get the BITPIM program, and when you have the latest version give me a jingle..I got fed up with ringtone companies gouging everyone. I got tired of being ripped off and bent over. So I found a solution. Download my own ringtones, mp3's, wallpapers. contact. phone lists, etc...all using bitpim. it works and it is totally safe. Companies like verizon and others don't want you to know that because if everyone knew it..where would they be...right?

Ok, the sd card problem, and pictures. You have to go to your manage memory option and let the phone kow that when you take a picture. ok..here goes go to settings and tools, then go to #5 system. then go to #4 manage memory. Then goto #1 save options. if you have your sdcard installed the phone will give you the options to save both sounds and pics to your card.

I am very interested in buying this phone primarily for it's mp3 capabilities but am concerned that I might be better off getting a dedicated mp3 player. Since I am due for an upgrade I can get the phone for only $50! Can someone tell me how good the phone is as an mp3 player?

1) I read it will drain the battery fast. How fast?

2) I heard that the 2.5 mm "standard jack" is not compatible with just any stereo headset and that you need to buy the LG one. Is this true? This concerns me because I wanted to use an FM transmitter to send to my car stereo but am worried it won't work.

3) Can you organize the mp3's stored on your memory card through the Lg my music menu or any other way? I thought I read that you can't put them in any subfolders but maybe that was when just downloading.

4) Should I just get an mp3 player and upgrade later?

I just got this phone and I'd like to transfer my mp3's to my phone as ringtones. I DO have a mac, and I don't want to buy a usb cord unless it will work. Can someone tell me if this bitpan thing works with macs, and if I can transfer files (mp3's and mp4's) from my ibook to the VX9800? I am very lost, and I don't know what I can and can't do. How do I add a sound to 'my sound' folder in order to attach that sound to a pix message?
I know there are some that are provided by the phone, but I want to make my own sound. Not by recording it through the phone, but creating one and sending it to the phone, like BitPim does.
BitPim can only send a sound to a 'ringtone' folder.
I did it once through xingtone.com and they sent me a sound and it went straight to the 'my sound' folder, but it was a free trial one ringtone thing and then I had to pay.
Does anybody know how to send a sound to the phone or use BitPim to do this?

im trying to get pictures from my computer to my phone. i formatted the miniSD card and put the pictures into the MY_PIX folder but when i put the card back in my phone each picture is accompanied by a "?" image that CAN NOT be erased!!
can anyone help me with this. I've tried compressing the files because i thought the problem was that they were too big....... it didn't work!

genma808@hotmail.com for msn..but for a short answer go to your verizon store and get the update for your phone,(will take about one hour, so go knowing that) that will allow you play the mp3's without it rebooting. as for pictures and videos..you need to change the format into a 3g2 format. or 3g. that is the phone's video format.just google for a 3g converter. peace hope this helps.

Is there a way to get 2Gb miniSD card working in the phone. It does not recognize the card.

i have mp3's on the phone but is there any way to organize them into playlists or something? i tried organizing them on the computer but when i put the mini sd back into the phone it just goes into alphabetical order

i have a 1 gig card and i can get the mp3s to transfer and read on the phone. however, i am having trouble with ringontes. i got the bitpim program and selected a clip of a song, and exported it to the ringtones folder on the card, but the phone doesn't see it. any ideas?

I'm in big trouble: I transfered one of my midi files from my computer over to my VX9800 using BitPim and now everytime I go to "My Ringtones" my phone simpily restarts. Everytime! I can't access any of my music now. Has anyone experienced this before? Is there a solution?? Any help would be great.

Only success I've had is using an FM transmitter along with a stereo jack converter from Radio Shack. This only works in mono however and I'm wondering if anyone else has had "stereo" link success?

heh..looks like a bunch of people have misguided perceptions of this phone..any ways i have be able to do everything everybody here is complaining about,mp3's as ringtones,play mp3's on my 1GB card. and what not, even hacked it to get free internet. hehehehe free sync to e-mail, the works. lol..but i'm not sharing my secret..maybe for a price though, but anyhow this took me too long to just "give" it away. laters noobs.

I have a question. I bought the scan disk card for the LG 9800 how do I download music on to it. I have a slot into my computer. Can I just insert to card into the slot and download the music on and then insert it to the phone. Or do I have to purchase a USB cable. PLEASE PLEASE HELP!!

OK, quick answers for popular problems...

#1: Update your phone w/Verizon. Go to the store and ask them for an update.

#2: MP3's on Cards... Make sure you format the card in the phone first and then put the MP3 Files into the "My Music" folder on your card.

Also, open the phone, press MENU, then press 0. It will then ask for a code, enter all zeros and you'll get a system menu. At the bottom it will say "Music Setting" and in there select "MP3 & MOD" or "MP3 Only" , whichever one works.

2GB CARDS WILL WORK WITH NEW FIRMWARE!

#3: BitPim Is GOD!!!! Google them, go to their website, get their software, and don't be lazy! Read up and learn like humans do and you will have a better life with your VX9800!

Bitpim will take care of your ringtones/pictures/backing up your phone #'s and Texts, AND MORE!!!!

#4: Invest in a Bluetooth Adapter for your Computer or USB Adapter for your phone to the computer, bitpim works best with these.

#5: ENJOY YOUR $300+ PHONE, Seriously, you paid for it!!!

Yea, i been readin on this page for like a month debating whether or not to get a 1gb or 2gb some of ya'll say it work n some say it don't. Whats tha real answer!!!! So i went to Verizon talkin about how all ya'll say yes and half say no. They said tha only way is to jus buy it and try. If that don't work go to tha verizon store ask for tha upgrade....if that don't work sell tha bitch card to friend or ebay. and buy tha 1gb. i heard that one works pretty well. I just got my LG VX9800 (and for some reason when I hook up my phone to the PC it won't read. If I unplug it and plug it back in the icon for Windows XP says new hardware is ready for use and then 30 seconds later it goes away and it says the phone is not connected. Anyone have similar problems and know of a fix?

hey ive been using bitpim for a while and than i had my phone swapped and everytime i try to load my ringers it only allows me to put about 14 of them on when before i had 40+. anyone know why this is happening???
