Nokia announced support for GSM technology over the 450 MHz frequency band (currently phones use 850/900/1800/1900). GSM 450 should be able to reach consumers in low density areas for a very low cost:
Nokia envisions a mobile landscape where operators can profitably offer mobile services to a broader range of consumers for as little as USD 5 per month.
No timetable was announced.
Good point David, though technically Nokia didn't mention making a GSM 450 phone with other frequencies. I would assume it would be dual band (450/1900?).
You just need to go to T-Mobile and use a tri-band 900/1800/1900 handset.
Don't have to stick with Moto any more. Sony Ericsson Z520a Quad band coming in a month to Cingular. Much better then Moto. Also Quad Band Nokia 6270 coming. I don't like Moto any more.
This is quite hilarious coming from a company that can't seem to have the common sense to make a quad-band phone. So, for people like me who travel outside the U.S., I purchase an "American" Nokia phone (850, 1800, 1900) then travel to South America (900) and the phone is useless. I stick with Motorola's for that reason.
