MocoNews notes that an online gambling company stated in its annual report that it intends to launch a mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) for gambling. MVNOs often go after a niche audience, such as sports nuts (Mobile ESPN) and spanish speakers (Movida). Fortuna Gambling sees an opening for mobile gambling:
"The long-term vision is to develop the ultimate Mobile Virtual Network Operator [MVNO] for the gambling sector, providing a branded mobile subscription service directly to consumers with a goal of being synonymous with mobile gambling, like the recently launched Mobile ESPN is with the mobile sports sector."
Online gambling is currently a grey area with US authorities--usually operations keep staff and servers in other countries to counteract US gaming law.
I doubt it's legal, but I would be tempted. Cheaper than going to Vegas!
mobile espn fineshed as of december 31
I think you're right about the legality issue--it's going to be tough. I am not sure of the oversight MVNOs have, but I doubt a US carrier is going to let a gambling company lease space. Though time will tell. I am sure it would be popular.
