Verizon Wireless announced it has chosen Lucent to deploy EV-DO Revision A. The network upgrade is a combination of hardware and software updates. Verizon has been testing Lucent's rev A technology since 2005. Once completed Verizon Wireless will be able to deploy a new range of services, such as push-to-talk, messaging, Voice over IP and of course faster internet access for data customers.

Revision A brings the speed of EV-DO up to an impressive 3.1 megabits per second (Mbps) down and 1.8 Mbps up. Revision 0 (what is being used today) maxes out with an upload speed of 144kbps.

Timing was not announced. Sprint Nextel announced it will begin the upgrade in Q1 2007.
