Verizon Wireless and T-Mobile USA are expected to lead the upcoming FCC spectrum auction. Cingular and Sprint have plenty of available spectrum thanks to mergers.

The Federal Communications Commission auction begins on Jan. 26, 2005 for 242 wireless licenses, including large markets such as Los Angeles, Denver and Orlando as well as smaller markets like McAllen, Texas and Lynchburg, Virginia.

22 entities have been accepted to bid in the auction while 27 more are waiting for approval. MobileTracker will provide full coverage of the sale in January.
