Microsoft announces Windows Mobile 5.0

As expected, Microsoft has announced the next version of its mobile operating system called Windows Mobile 5.0. Rumors pointed to the name "Windows Mobile 2005" prior to today's announcement, but it's the same software. Windows Mobile 5.0 is a major upgrade. New features include: * Increased customization ability for carriers/manufacturers * Network support for 3G networks and WiFi * QWERTY keyboard support * Updated versions of Word and Excel Mobile plus the addition of PowerPoint mobile (playback only) * ActiveSync 4.0 * Support for persistent memory storage * Windows Media Player 10 Mobile It was not announced when Microsoft will ship Windows Mobile 5.0. Dropping 2005 from the software's title may point to a launch later in the year. The announcement was made by Bill Gates at the Microsoft Mobile & Embedded Developers Conference in Las Vegas.
