If I was a Sidekick user, OTA only updates would be a very frustrating waiting process. You have no idea when the update is coming (or even if it is at all). Plus we've heard in the past some changes that happened OTA that weren't for the good of the users, like removing games. And security issues like we all saw with Paris Hilton.

What do actual users of the device think?

As usual Jon, you share concerns that non-users worry about. As a user for 8 months. I'm not worried about security issues, due the fact that what happened to Paris Hilton happened because of clever social engineering, not because of a direct attack on the servers. The OTA updates are done in a timely manner within 2-3 days of announcement to prepare the network for a staggered rollout so that the network doesn't choke. I have gone through 1 OTA and no problems whatsoever.

My Sidekick II is still on 2.0... I'm not confident I'll see the javascript update for 2.3 anytime in the near future. I'd probably be on a different phone before the OTA came through.

Humberto: Thanks for the tip, it's all what you're used to I suppose. If it were a tad smaller (maybe even just thinner) I think I would pick one up.

Being a Hiptop user, OTA updates aren't that frustating. Well, at leat to me. Its fun knowing what your going to be getting in the next couple of days. Being said, that's days and not weeks or even longer.

But anyways, its a fun device to have and its size isn't a problem once you have it and use it everyday.

I love my Hiptop. Brooks is right that you get used to the size. It makes typing on it easy which is a plus.

I was a fan of the original and upgraded shortly after the second one came out. Awaiting V3!

The OTA will be worth the wait. It includes not only Javascrupt on the browser, but added camera functions including setting a pic for the keguard screen, Buddy Icons on AIM (you can use camera pics for that, too!), and J2ME access for programmers. J2ME should expand the catalog of apps and games (my estimate: 4x-10x).

Do I take this to mean that Javascript will be coming at the end of October and will audio and video be part of that update.

I've had sk2 for over a year and pretty damn happy with it, although some Java would be a nice OTA upgrade. =)
I agreed if sk3 is in the works and to make it the ultimate it should have bluetooth, mp3 with a SD card slot and portable wireless stereo headphones as an option,at least a 2mp camera, and a SECURE desktop interface and that's my wish list for sk3. Now will somebody please copy this to Danger?

So by the end of oct every one should be getting the update?

Its like winning the lottery, or so they say. Two of the 5 people in the office I work at have "Won" and recieved their updates on their SK2. Looks to be some great new features, like being able to surf to websites that are using java scripting. A wallpaper for when the screen is closed and the keyboard is locked. etc. I am patiently waiting for my OTA update to arrive, it will be here soon, I am sure. FYI the other two recieved theirs this week (one on wed afternoon, the other this morning about 2am). There is no priority, no shortcut to download, no keys to press, it all happens automatically in the background at random. Danger monitors the flow of how many get distributed per hour to keep network congestion down. I would imagine that they roll more overnight since the usage level is a lot lest, but that is just a guess on my part. I have been extremely happy with my SK2 and can't wait to see the release of the SK3 sometime in 2006.

Dang, I hope to get my OTA sometime soon. That whole thing about surfing the websites that use javascript sounds good because there are a lot of sites that I visit that use js. Wallpaper is cool too, getting pretty sick of looking at a plain screen, at least now we can personalize it a little more. We paid good money for it, we should be able to do something!!

i received the update 3 days ago. the first update was received properly and i began to examine the new features. i then received a 2nd update, and as it was half way thru updating, a message appeared and said that there was a hardware problem. i immediately tried to contact tmobile by dialing 611, and realized that nothing on the phone was working. then i called tmobiles 1800 number and after 1 hour of going thru the different departments at customer care, they said the phone is “dead” and they will be sending me a new phone. they also said that it is very rare that this happened. i still had to pay the shipping and handling for the “refurbished” sidekick 2. just got it in the mail today, and i guess i have to wait for them to send me the update again.

Then after I got it my cuzion did. He got the update b4 I did. Its that normal?

Still did not receive my update, so sent a message to danger, representative replied with:

I havent had my update also, but a friend told me that if i turn my phone on and off several times i wud get the update, i dont know if thats true, but i didnt work, after a million times, i hate it, and i hope i get it soon. =(

Last week in the early morning hours of Thursday I got OTA update 2.3. It downloaded and installed and rebooted. Then, the rest of my software packages were re-downloaded and installed. Then... the radio quit working and my phone died. It showed v2.3 for everything, but several system information fields read "unknown," including the IMSI, ICC ID, Device ID, and radio firmware.

T-mobile sent me a replacement phone, which I got in the mail yesterday. That phone has OS v2.0 on it and works fine. I have not had an OTA update to this phone yet, but I'm worried about it possibly killing another phone!

Has anyone else had this happen? My phone was perfectly fine before OTA 2.3.

I want my damn update, everyone i know has gotten it and when i called the t-mobile sidekick department even they were surprised i didnt get it. There's a recording t-mobile has out that says everyone will have the update by november 30th, but when i talked to the tech person and asked if i'd have it by then he replied maybe i hope. Ive read about people being able to force the update on there phone but have been unable to to do it. Any one else still without the update?

I haven't got my OTA 2.3 version update yet either I've been waiting like 2 months since I first heard about it and I'm still waiting I'm cunfused is there really a such thing or what cuz when I call the 1800 number they tell me theve never heard of such a thing

Yeah ive had the sk2 for almost a year and i recently got the 2.3 update but i lost my phone so they sent me a new one and i've been waiting forever to get the update. I tried calling tmobile and forcing it but gosh it takes like hours to get through and some of the people are just so stupid. dont call them. they dont help. just gotta be patient and wait.

The way yall are talking I have to get me a sk2. I have been waiting for the longest to get one. I am getting mad waiting day after day to get my sk2. My parents are holding me up. I don't think I am going to keep waiting for them. Everbody who's anybody has one. And since I am part of anybody I have to get one. And get the upgrade version 2.3.
