LG CE500 launched by Cingular

Nov 02 2005 - 04:51 PM ET | Cingular, LG Mobile Phone

Cingular launched the LG CE500 today, another music phone. The CD500 is LG's first major attempt at a music phone and will compete with the ROKR in Cingular's lineup.

Features of the LG CE500 include:

  • 40MB built-in, plus a microSD card slot (64MB included)
  • 128 × 160 pixel screen with 262K colors
  • MP3, AAC and AAC+ music player with dual speakers
  • VGA camera

The LG CE500 is currently a BestBuy exclusive, though it will work its way into other retail stores soon. It's priced at $99.99 with a two-year contract. In a bit of related news, Cingular also adjusted the price of the ROKR to $149.99, a $100 reduction.

Just felt like I had to give some sort of semi-official review. So...

PROS
-262k internal screen/65k external screen (this is SICK). You can even have different wallpapers for the external/internal screens (nice touch).

-Keys are nice and large-very responsive (unlike my past motorolas)and overall keypad is well layed out. There are one-touch keys for camera, mp3 player (nice) and internet.
-Stereo speakers on top side of phone ROCK and are bearly visible.

-Call clarity is excellentand better than the moto's I've had. Reception also has been excellent thus far.

-The mp3 player on this thing is NUTS, graphic equalizer skins, streaming track-artist info, software for dummys (this is my first mp3 player), external buttons (you can play the mp3 player without opening the phone ))... did I mention the one-touch mp3 player button!?!?! Finally on this point, it has shuffle and repeat, pretty damn detailed for a phone/mp3 player!

-Camera is excellent as well, besides all your standard features, has fun frames (put designs around your picture right there on the phone), multi-shot and the brightest it's really a flash you've EVER seen on a camera phone.

-Phone Menus are easily navigated (you'll feel like a genius if you've ever used motorola phones) and are almost too easy to get mastery over but this is good for the novices out there.

-Vibrate is confident and the ringtones probaly will never have to be put on max volume. Hearing in the earpiece is great as well

-I had my doubts about the looks of the phone when PHONE SCOOP first broke it back in July. But I must say in person this phone is VERY good looking... you will get looks and questions without ever trying

-Cingular finally taking a note from other carriers and putting there branding on the outside of the phone... I like this as I like to represent my carrier! Also, external caller id stays lit while on call with nice Cingular logo for onlookers.

-Phonebook is nice and allows for multiple contacts and pic caller id, also have multiple letter name search unlike my former moto's.

-If all the above wasnt enough, this phone for $99/w two year came with usb cable, 64 micro sd card and adapter, stereo headsets and lg's software on mini disc

I could probaly dig for more pros... but you guys get the picture

CONS
-No bluetooth, while this may be a major blow for some and much as I would like to THINK of myself as some bluetooth guru, it was not a deal-breaker for me. I just never really used mine for its full potential and if your like me with no bluetooth car kit or bluetooth pc or adapter and are simply to lazy to use the wireless headset regularly you'll be fine. Besides, it does at least have IR

-Ringtones are assinged by group and not caller. This is one of the main things I liked about my moto's but if your like me I purchased 4 or 5 ringtones and grouped people together anyway, so same concept (even though individual ringtones are still better).

-Can't customize D-pad or softkeys, not that big of a deal but still would be nice to have the option!

-Only 250 contacts in phonebook.

-No speakerphone.

Hey Cingular77, since you know so much about the phone.....

So if you cant use the mp3s as ringtones, all of the ringtones are polyphonic? if so THAT SUX! im thinking about getting this phone but if it doesnt even have SPEAKER phone or real ringtones then im getting the RAZR...

MadZach21 Dec 18 2005

yea im getting really annoyed at the fact that i may have to get another phone because this one cant play mp3s as a ringtone. everything else is cool though. but because of the ringtones. i may have to switch.

beatle Dec 22 2005

Best value for money for a non-bluetooth phone. I love it!

Just enjoy the features it offers and not cry over the features it doesn't have.

I'm still waiting for cingular77's reply on how to use mp3 as ringtones.

Hi just got the phone and I have been trying to put MP3 songs on it. The LG manager program does not find them is there more software I need to do it?

JDM602 Dec 31 2005

I have this phone and I love it. Alright, for everyone who wants to know how to put mp3's on the LG CE500, first you have to install the software from the cd that came with the phone. Once you do that, the phone comes with a USB data cable to plug in the usb port on your computer. With the LG program open, click connect. Once connected, on the top of the program open the folder with all your mp3's songs on it, (it will show them in the window once you click the folder). You then select the mp3 song you want to transfer to the phone, then click the download button. Depeding on the size of the songs you put on the phone it may take up a lot of memory, so i recommend resizing the mp3 songs. I use Acoustica MP3 Audio Mixer to do this, therefore more songs can be added. At most i have had 50 songs on it. Enjoy.

I have this phone and I was wondering if anyone knew how to upload the pictures from the camera feature on the phone to your pc.

I've been looking everywhere. I know you can email it but that costs. I was hoping anyone knew a program that transfers pictures.

Help?

Thanks.

Deseree' Jul 25 2006

I got the LG CE500 phone and i like it, but in a way i don't! Sure the price of it was way better then spending $300 on a nextel, but you gotta pay for ringtones, i have a program for ringtones but its for nextel, so that sucks i can't use it now! The speakerphone is also a hassle sometimes, like when your on hold and you don't feel like having the phone to your ear! Then i also don't like how you can't block your calls, or 3-way call! I think i'm going to switch back to Nextel! The reason i got my nextel turned off is because i thought it didn't have that good of service around here because my phone would always cut out! but my cingular is worse! it shuts right off and raising the bar shouldn't be the logo!!!

joseph Oct 27 2006

aye how do i get the lg music manager program .. i looked everywhere for the program but couldnt find it . can u help me out? i dont have the cd anymore either so yeah
