Motorola V557 launched by Cingular

Nov 17 2005 - 11:41 AM ET | Cingular, Motorola

motorola_v557.jpgCingular today launched the Motorola V557. Despite the higher numbers, the V557 is nearly identical to the previously launched V551. The only difference is the addition of Motorola's SCREEN3 technology that offers news and other information as a ticker streaming across the home screen. Cingular is the first carrier to support SCREEN 3.

Other features of the Motorola V557 include:

  • Quad-band GSM
  • EDGE high-speed data
  • Bluetooth
  • VGA camera

Cingular is selling the V557 for $99 after rebate and with a 2-year service contract.

NOKIA has whats called cell info broadcasting system for like 8 years already, its built in with all its handsets - and now you see Motorola re-INVENTED it again.

The SCREEN3 thing actually looks pretty neat, but I have a feeling it could also kill a battery pretty fast. But as long as you can turn it off it would be fun to try out.

what's this cell info broadcasting system?

I have the opportunity to buy the v557 for $20 more than the v551. I am not sure if it is worth it. The only difference I see is the ticker info, and I'm not sure I care about that. Anyone have any comments???

I've had the V557 for one month now. Battery life is great. It feels solid... easy to hold with good voice connectivity. I have disabled the ticker and web access. The Cingular version of this phone makes it too easy to get on their network incurring more excess charges than I had intended. I do like this phone. Just be careful. It is designed to pick your pocket.
