Samsung X820 announced, world's slimmest phone

Jun 21 2006 - 02:50 PM ET | Samsung

Samsung X820Samsung is not shy about identifying its "World firsts" and that tradition continues with the Samsung X820 (also known as the Ultra Edition 6.9). At a mere 6.9mm, the X820 is the self-described world's thinnest handset. In comparison to other handsets, the X820 is astoundingly thin: Motorola RAZR V3 (14mm), Nokia N90 (24mm), Motorola Q (12mm).

Features of the Samsung X820 include:

  • 2 megapixel camera
  • Fiberglass-infused plastic case
  • Triband GSM (900/1800/1900) plus EDGE
  • 176×220 262K color screen
  • Bluetooth
  • Weight of 66g, full size: 113 × 50 x 6.9 mm

The X820 will first hit the Russian market next month, followed by other European markets. No word on pricing.

Hmm, that screen looks like 220x176 and not 176x220.

wasn't this announced two months ago?

Samsung has a strange announcement schedule, so this handset has been seen before but this is the official announcement. At trade shows they will show off models they haven't "announced". Odd.

Eugenia: You're right about the screen resolution, it does look landscape. The spec sheet says 176x220, but they could have reversed it.

Just bought this phone. It is amazingly thin. Great wow factor with friends and colleagues.

The camera is good. The fact that you can browes through office documents its very useful. Also the email works well.

I used to have a Nokia 6230 and I still think that the menu system in the nokia is far superior to that of this phone. But never the less the samsung just needs a little getting used to.

With the bluetooth switched on the talk time is approximately 1h and then the phone dies.

The media player here is very good though. When you play an mp3, the sound is loud and clear. Even louder than on my nokia.

PC sync worked to download outlook contacts, although it did not recognise birthdays. Also I found that the samsung cannot sync with a web server to download contact from a backup on the internet. This was painful as I had to go home before I could use my phonebook.

If you want this phone - come to Moscow and you can get it a month before everyone else.)

donno about that vijay rana....never kept my phone in the back pocket...this extremely thin phone may design for your shirt pocket (probably, to target blue collar...not for a wet-back job)....use it wisely!
