sony-ericsson-logo.jpgSony Ericsson reported a great second quarter thanks mostly to continued brisk sales of its Walkman branded line of mobile phones. Besides selling more of its own phones, Sony Ericsson updated its projection industry wide and is now expecting 950 million unit sales for the year, up from its original estimate of 900m.

Figures from the second quarter (all comparisons are made to the year ago quarter unless noted):

  • Net revenue up 41% to €2.27 billion
  • Net profit up 91% to €143 million
  • Total phone shipments hit 15.7 million, up 33%
  • 1/4 of Sony Ericsson's shipments were Walkman branded and the company has now hit the 10 million milestone with that category

10M is a strong number, especially for a smaller player like Sony Ericsson. This just goes to show that music can drive sales and that Apple should get in on the game.
