Cingular uses SMS for tsunami relief

Jan 06 2005 - 12:33 AM ET | Cingular
Cingular Wireless, the largest US wireless carrier, is using text messages to collect funds for areas damaged by the recent tsunamis. SMS donations worked extremely well in Europe and Asia shortly after the disaster, but this is the first major use we know of in the US. bq. Starting Thursday Cingular Wireless will send text messages to all of its 46 million customers, giving them a chance to make $1 or $2 donations to the Asian tsunami disaster relief effort, charges that will appear on their monthly bills. With even a small percentage of users donating, the total could top the efforts of most nations.
