Not a bad price for what you get, but it doesn't have any real standout features. I hear it uses LGs new interface. Is this true?

JUST GOT THE PHONE. HAD A MOTOROLA T720 BEFORE AND LOVED THAT PHONE! IT TOOK A PWDER ON ME AFTER THREE YEARS SO I 'UPGRADED'. THE LG IS SMALLER IN SIZE AND IS 'LIGHT' WEIGHT WISE. I MISS MY MOTOROLA T720 IN THAT RESPECT. AS FOR THE FEATURES...THEY'RE OKAY. NOTHING TO STICK MY NOSE UP AT BUT NOTHING SO EARTH SHATTERING THAT I'M GLAD I NO LONGER HAVE MY MOTOROLA. I HAVE A 'CAMERA' ON THIS NEW PHONE LG VX 5200 BUT, DIDN'T REALLY NEED ONE AS I JUST USE MY PHONE, WELL, "AS A PHONE"! YES, YES...THERE ARE SOME OF US WHO STILL USE IT FOR THAT ONLY AND LOVE IT! I too had my trusty Motorola T720 that I just loved but felt the need to upgrade just because everyone kept mentioning how outdated my phone was. I chose the LG VX 5200 because Verizon had a special deal to get it and that's pretty much it. Like the previous poster, I don't need a camera on my phone. Some may find it a cool feature but I just consider it a nuisance that drains my phone's power. I also must agree and say that I prefer the square, heavier feel of the Motorola T 720 in my hand than this one. This new phone is awkwardly shaped and is so lightweight that I'm afraid it will break! Whereas the Motorola had a simple user interface, this new phone takes some navigation. I've had it for two weeks now and just haven't warmed to it at all. As a result, I find myself using my cell phone less than usual. I too prefer to use my phone only as a phone and don't need all the bells and whistles. Perhaps the cell phone makers will remember this and make a phone just for we users who only need a phone..not a camera, calender, calculator, games, music etc. etc. Just design a flip phone for us that is comfortable in our hands, has a solid-weighted feel to it, has a long lasting battery and loads of talk time. It's all we truly need!

Just replaced a POS Nokia with the VX5200. It's got more bells and whistles, but it's got a nice solid feel to it. Just hope it's as reliable as the old Qualcomm/Kyocera that I had for three years, abused the living daylights out of and finally had to part with because the battery wouldn't charge and a new battery was going to cost more than a new phone. Just waiting for my USB cable to get here so I can do the ringtone/wallpaper thing. Folks at the Verizon store said it wasn't possible to connect it to a computer. *laugh*

I just got the LG5200 and Verizon is telling me that there isn't a USB cord to hook up to the computer, but one is shown in the User's Guide as an available accessory. I searched the internet, but can't find one. Anyone have any suggestions?

Although the VX5200 allows you to save a sound that is embedded in a text message, VZ has intentionally disabled the option to use the saved recording as a ringtone. Actually, the manufacturer's own manual says that you can do this: p. 32, "My Ringtones" -- "allows you to record new tone to set as ringtone." But in fact you cannot do this -- at least, not with the OS that VZ had loaded onto the phone. All you would need is a 'set as' menu option, the same as you have for graphics and wallpaper. How preposterous, and how insulting!

Even aftr the dimmer fades, the display on the outside (before you flip it open) goes off. so you can't tell the time or if you have VM unles you hit illuminate button.

This phone works pretty good. I still miss my Star Tac though. It was intuitive, this one is not. About pictures, what do you do with them? Can you email them? Off load them to a computer with the optonal USB? or just admire them for a second on the lighted screen? The Verizon service center was clueless and the User Guide is not specific.

I dont think you can get free get it now yet, but get the usb cable and the drivers and I believe you can put midi ringtones on it (again not sure) I will be trying this as soon as I buy the cable. I just replaced my Motorola T720 with this phone a couple days ago after having the Motorola for over 2 years. I had dropped it one too many times and the screen was messed up. All my friends had LGs and kept praising them. Really I got it because after rebates it was free. I was also wondering if there is a way to keep the outside screen on to see the time. I miss my Motorola and while I like the LG I kind of wish I had waited until January when Verizon will start carrying the Razr because I like the Motorola OS better

Last night my LG vx5200 froze up on me and after about five minutes I had to remove the battery. Problem is that when I put the battery back in the phone wouldnt start. It continually goes through the intro tones and photos. It will not connect or go to the menu screen. I am returning it today and will probably go back to Motorola

The reason the outside LCD screen does not stay lit is because it is a color screen and much like a computer goes into screen saver mode. Older phones do not have a color front LCD and therefore will stay on. This cannot be prevented.

To use the speakerphone function on the LG5200, simply hold down the CLR/(speakerphone symbol) button in the center of the phone's dialpad area. Hold it down until it says speakerphone. =)

I think I found a bug in the 5200 software. I entered 4 calender appointments fine and selected search and all 4 listed. I erased one that was completed and now when pressing search the phone freezes up and I have to wait for the power on timeout of remove the battery reset it. Next I erased all appointments and added the appointments back in. Search worked until again I delete an appointment and phone froze again. I thought ok bad phone but I tried the same thing on my wife's phone and the same thing happened. It would seem that there is an problem with deleting appointments and the search function.

So of you few people who bought the cable and software...does it really work? The verizon guy talked me into signing up for that $2.99 plan to send 20 pictures to anyone a month (times TWO PHONES). So at $6 a month, i'd rather spend a little money on the cable and software....as long as it definately works. All i want to do is be able to put the pictures on my pc. How do you get ringtones using the cable? Don't you still have to pay VZ?

Two questions.... does anyone have any sort of non-slip skin for this phone? As the phones get smaller and smoother, they are harder to hold on to.

And if you can get a skin to replace the stock, how do you do it? I removed the 4 screws but could not get the skin off. I did not want to destroy the new phone by prying around.

Ok figured out the voice mail part.. go to messaging - voicemail - when it calls and says no one has setup VM press the pound Sign (#)

To set up your voicemail, press 1, then send. If this is your first time going to the voicemail, it should automatically prompt you through everything.

hi everyone, i just ordered this phone from verizon...can anyone tell me how the sound quality/ volume is on this phone. I had the nokia6201 from cingular and the sound quality and volume sucked. the callers sounded very distant and the volume was very very low most of the time. It would go up and down from decent sound quality to very low tinny volume requiring a hearing aid. Half the conversation was "can u hear me now?" Just got a vx5200 sound goes up and down sound quality in and out had the LG which went through the war unscathed after 17 days the vx shows on the front display "car kit" under my name and since that message came the phone doesnt call out or take calls which verizon service claims the phone is "basically fried need new one"

I have an LG VX5200 Verizon Wireless. Wanted to transfer pictures from the cellphone camera to my PC. Bought a cable from cellularfactory.com. Installed cable driver using teeny little CD that came with the cable. Installed "Handset Manager" software I'd found a week ago, don't remember where. It was designed for LG VX5200 though. Couldn't get the setup to work. Computer kept complaining it couldn't find cable drivers. Then I installed Bitpim. It works. I've transferred pics from the camera to the PC. Uninstalled the cable drivers and the Handset Manager software. Don't care about ringtones or the other stuff, so I can't comment there. But Bitpim 0.8.08 Official works with my VX5200. www.bitpim.org

I don't know how but there is part of a conversation saved on my phone. Which I can only find when I am sending a picture to someone - where you can insert sounds. okay, so i have the vx5200 phone - love it. wouldn't trade it for the world. i bit the bullet and supported the verizon bureaucracy and bought the ringtones from their "sony music box" ringtone app on the phone. my question now is ... my phone memory is "full" - so how do you delete old ringtones to make room for new ones? i unfortunately already bought some ringtone credity that are unusable because my phone's memory is "full" every time i try to download a new ringtone. can anybody help me? i tried the manual ... dad, everything else i know how to try haha. thanks :)

Purchased a USB cable and software on Ebay, the seller was "EverydaySource". Came with the cable and driver software, plus a car chargers and a switching charger that works with any voltage from 100 to 240 volts.

Total price $2.95 plus $7.00 shipping.
Not bad, fast service.

Running Win XP_Pro SP2.

Everything installed, bitpim recognized the phone.
For the first few experiments I had the phone in read only mode. (set in bitpim edit/settings)

Took some pictures, transferred to PC... nice!

Converted an existing mp3 file from
stereo/192kb/44.1 to mono/64kb/22050 using
Bitpim and then uploaded as a "ringer".

No problem, now have a custom mp3 as a ringer, or
can used the phone as a limited mp3 player.

I say limited because the LG VX5200 has 32Meg memory and I imagine it would be possible to fill
it up quickly and possibly jam up the OS which my need room to write and update other files.

A nice feature of Bitpim is under "View".
Check "filesystem" for the directory structure
of the LG.

Bitpim is very full featured.

got my cord from ebay have a vx 5200 and i loaded the drivers first pluged in the cord it found a usb to serial port device and it detected my phone through bitpim .i backed up my phone and then went to town loads ringtones that i make like a charm and i can back up the pics i take too! the only thing i want to do know is put games on it but am not sure how any tips? lets see what yall can do.

my daughter locked up her phone too. If you hit *228 and chose one of the options (i forget what it is, try both...wont hurt). While its doing its thing, click the top right button (soft key), should say unlock over it. It should reset the entire phone.

The -Car Kit- mode happens to many LG models and is a way of telling the manufacturer that water damage has occured, although many phones can somehow kick into Car Kit mode without any water contact. Check the bottom of your battery. If the pink little strip is now purple, you have had water damage and the 1 year manufacturer waranty is void. Unless you had insurance, which is $5 monthly and I highly recomend it, you would have to pay for a new phone or deal with the early deactivation fee of $275 dollars.

So you're telling me that VG has made a phone that basically works if it gets a little wet except that it wont make sound. and hell, thats not even true cause it makes a beeping noise when i plug it in to get charged. VG has really just f*cked consumers into paying more just in case of a little accident. i mean really, how could a complicated little piece of machinery work perfectly well *the damn thing still does just about everything its supposed to do* except now that i've gotten a little bit of water on it i can no longer hear out of the earpiece nor will it ring. i'm going to notify the BBB tomorrow `cause this is just unfair. i got my phone stuck on car kit mode do you know if there is any possible way to fix it??

i fixed the "car kit" mode on an LG VX5200. got the idea from some other guy. basically, you have to short-circuit the bottom port where you plug the charger in. i took a piece of foil and played around with it in the port and car kit mode disappeared. i think you might have to short circuit the left end with the right end of the port and possibly touch some of the middle prongs while doing it. good luck!

I had the "car kit" text display as well. As Paul stated its an easy fix if you short it out. Instead of foil I just took a butter knife and layed it on top of the charger prongs. As soon as the knife touched the prongs the words went away and service was restored.

My son's phone had the "car kit" display as well. I tried shorting it out also, but had no luck. I took it to Technical Support and they had it working in about 10 minutes. They said car kit means either it got wet or the pins in the charging port are bent. They said the prongs in the charging port were bent and that if it continues to happen, it could be that the charger itself is doing the damage and should be replaced.

i have the vx5200. i have the same problem with the ringtones. i found a site though, that will allow you to upload MP3 or M4A files and send you a pix msg. of the song. I too have an LG5200 and have the car kit issue. Bought the phone 5 days ago and car kit appears. Tech support said it is a software issue - I tried shorting it out and it didn't work. That is true BS from Verizon with so many people having the same issue - it is obviously a defect in their product and they should fix the issue and definitely not charge for a new phone. This issue needs to be taken further.

HELP!
My phone feel in water and although it seems to be working more or less .. the screens have mist and there is a noise like there is trouble with the speaker and audio...
I want to open it but I cant figure out how. i removed the 2 screws on the top ( where the screens are ) but cant manage to find what else do I need to do in order to open it so i can let it dry.

I have many pictures on my phone that I want to send to my email. Is there a way I can send more then one picture at a time so i dont get slapped with so many .25 charges??????

I fixed the "car kit" problem on my daughter's VX5200 phone by spraying it with the fluid (non-CFC freon-152) from a can of computer duster. I sprayed the battery terminals, charger terminals and the entire keypad.

I fixed the "Car Kit" problem with the butter knife solution. Thanks for the infomation. I wish I would have had internet access while I was away with the phone to find this solution...took about 10 seconds once I read the post...

Is there a class action suit for the "car kit" problem with lgs. I've ruined two phones so far from sweat while exercising and both times verizon told me there was no fixing it. /Now I'm on my third one and am having the same problem. This is an obvious tactic on LG's part to sell more phones. I remember lexmark got sued for doing something simalier with their ink cartridges so they could sell more.

I have an LGVX6100 camera phone and woke up this morning to the Car Kit issue. Luckily I Googled this site and found out that I'm not alone. My phone has fixed itself (at least for now) after I plugged the wall charger into it. I think I'll be paying a visit to the local Verizon store or another provider altogether.

i just got the verizon lg5200. then i got some ringtones for it but come to find out they was going to my sounds instead of my ringtones . which really sucks because i had to pay for them. i ask the company why it did that and they said the phone dont support the ringtones only the wall papper. so if anyone knows how to get free ringtones for the phone please let me know.

I HAD the problem with the whole "Car Kit" thing with the old VX6100. When I called Verizon support, I was fortunate enough to get someone who turned out to be a SAVER rather than a "Buy a new one(r)". Hmm...that didn't sound right...but anyhow...ok so she asked me "Do you have a child?" I said "Yes, how did you know?" She explained to me that "Well, children are curious creatures and have decided to use their mouths as another hand. Let me ask you, does she inspect the phone with her mouth? Look at the bottom where the charger typically goes, does it look GREEN?". I examined the port and noticed, indeed it was green. Disgusted I said "EEEW...YES!" she said "that's ok. its only baby saliva...simple fix, take a DRY tooth brush and brush out all the green stuff. Restart phone and see if it went away". Luckily for me, it did but, at Costco, Carisa threw my phone out of the car which of course I was unaware of and got the new VX5200. Joy....

SO, for those of you that want pictures, ringtones...blah blah...get a cable! Serious, go to ebay and you can get one for $1.98 + $4.99 Shipping and Handling. No JOKE! Speedy delivery and speedy transaction. I plugged it in to the phone and hooked it up to my computer and BAM....got bitpim and am loading pics as I type this...however....my "ringtones" are unfortunately stuck in 'my sounds' so....if HOWARD is reading this, please type up a HOW YOU DID THIS on either this page or e-mail me at macaddiction01@netscape.net.

Now...for those of you with the Voice Mail how to set up issues. When you get the phone, first (obviously) register it. Get it programmed and do the *228 and update all the poo poo....then when you are done and the silly thing resets by rebooting itself, dial *86 (I believe) or if you have the little ENVELOPE button or Menu>Mailbox Tab>hit number 6 on keypad and this will dial into VERIZON Mailbox center, from there, you will get a greeting that says "Mailbox does not exist..." then you will hear *yes...DO NOT HANG UP* "If you would like to set up a voicemail box...." that is you option and answer yes to it....Please feel free to e-mail me with questions EXCEPT the ringtone issue...

HOWARD...please post how to load ringtones with bitpim and cable....TIA...

DUH! Okay...so I figured it out! So, with bitpim when you convert the music...READ HOWARDS POST....edit it to where you want the ringtone to start and finish. click ok to save it. now you will see it in the "sounds" folder (uhm...follow the built in tutorial for sounds), right click on it and move to the "ringers" tada...now load into your phone or ADD to your ringtones...omg...DUH! *slaps self to oblivion* good luck and again...got any Q's e-mail me! I stumbled across this site looking for how to send pictures from my camera to my email and if there was a charge for it, but as I read about all the problems with the "car kit" mode, I seem to remember when I got my phone there was a little rubber stopper (for lack of a better word) that covered the charger port. I also remember thinking, "This is stupid - it's not attached and will quickly be lost." Which of course, it was. I don't even think it made it's way home after I bought the phone. Anyway, I'm thinking this was LG's or Verizon's way of "protecting" the delicate pins/contacts from water - altho I'm sure it wasn't ever waterproof. My daughter likes to suck on my phone, but I will be putting a stop to that right now as I don't want to risk ruining my phone. Thanks for all the input tho - I know now that if it happens, I'll try the foil, butter knife, or toothbrush fix.

I have a problem hearing the voicemail i get...It never ask me to set up any voicemail, but when i call *86 it just ask me to leave a msg for myself...wacky! Currently i have loads of messages from people but obviously i cant check to hear any. Does anyone noe wat i need to do so i can listen to my voicemail? thnk you in advance!

Just to let you Folks know, I know a bit about Tech support for the Cells.

I've noticed a bit of "Car Kit" trouble complaints here. There is a simple fix.

Don't get the phones wet. The only time LG phones go into the car Kit mode is when liquid damage occurs, it's basically a shorting out of the phone. Reason they usually won't replace them is the technicians know that it's liquid damage, which isn't covered by the warranty.

What to do...If there is obvious corosion on the phone, get an old tothbrush, and try to remove all of it, then go to a store and lie your butt off. Get loud and call customer service, threaten to cancel your account, that usually gets CS to do something.

I have the LG VX5200 along withthe USB cable which by the way if your looking for one, can be found on ebay, I bought mine for 5 bucks, but I had to download the driver off of the web, just search google and you'll find a couple different places to download the driver. Anyways I'm using BitPim to transfer ringtones and data to the phone however I am not sure how to send pictures that I already have on the phone, to the computer that its connected to, if anyone could help me out that would be great, thanks!!

On my LG VX4400 phone I have been copying one minute memos - but now when I click the speaker/record now button on the left hand side of the phone, it beeps "MEMORY FULL" and will no longer let me record OR listen to my pervious recordings. How do I listen to my other memos if the memory is 'full'? Is there another way to get to the memos?
