Verizon Wireless announces LG VX8100 music upgrade

Sep 06 2005 - 06:26 PM ET | Verizon Wireless

Verizon Wireless today announced that owners of the LG VX8100 can bring their phones into a company owned store and get a free upgrade that will add an MP3 playing function. Despite having dedicated music control buttons, the VX8100 shipped without a music player. Customers with the software update will be able to load MP3s onto an external memory card.

Verizon Wireless is expected to launch a music download service starting in the first quarter of next year.

The LG VX8100, introduced in July, can be upgraded at any Verizon Wireless location to include MP3 capability. Download your favorite CDs to standard memory cards, insert a card into the phone and listen to music from wherever you are.

KyZiX Dec 05 2005

The biggest unknown on this phone I'm sure. I've recently found out that the miniSD card must be formatted with the phone by pressing/holding the play/pause key on the front of the phone. You then can insert the card into a reader and locate the appropriate folder (MY_FLIX, MY_MP3, MY_PIX, MY_SOUNDS). Should be self explainatory from there. Hope it helps.

Instructions For LG VX8100 MP3 Player

All, KyZiX stated exactly what you need to do. I have this working now. Here is what you need to do:
1) the mini-SD card MUST be formatted via your phone - the formatting places folders on the card. When formatting your card via the phone, you may be asked for a code. This code is typically the last for digits of the phone number for your phone.
2) The mp3 songs must be stored in the mp3 music folder that is created on your mini-SD card after you have formatted. This is the only directory your phone will read your music from. If you just place a mp3 song directly on the card, your phone will say it doesn't see any mp3 songs.
3) to get mp3 songs to the mini-SD card, you will either need to have a card reader for your PC or have the USB cable that allows you to connect your phone to your PC. I used a card reader. They're very inexpensive.

buster Dec 28 2005

who thinks yao ming should shut the fuck up since ppl bought the phone partially because of its mp3 playing capabilities? i do... cuz if u buy a phone saying it plays mp3s, u expect it to play mp3s and are pissed when it doesnt do what its supposed to. secondly, mp3s arent ringtones dumbass, theyre full songs dummy...yao ming is a big fuckin homo and should have his legs broken for his utter stupidity. eat shit yao, eat my shit... thanks.. by the way i got mine to work so its no skin off my back... u gotta program the miniSD disk in the phone before you hook it up to the computer so it recognizes the mp3 folder when u plug it into the computer. put the card in, press and hold the play/pause button and program it into your phone before hooking it up to the PC... oh ya and go fuck a goat yao, u stupid motherfucker

buster Dec 28 2005

oh ya... and learn how to spell "voilla" u fuckin ditch pig... sound it out like the 2 yr old dummy u r... does "vio-alla" sound right to u? what the fuck were u trying to say? do u stutter? do u live in your moms basement? r u like 45 yrs old? if u answered yes to all of the above, youre probably yao fuckin dumbshit ming, the village fuck... peace, go on!

To address the latest questions:

Lauren -
To format the card using the phone, do the following: go to Menu, then Settins & Tools. Scroll down and click System (#4). Scroll down and click Manage Memory. Scroll down and click Card Memory. In the bottom right corner, you'll see a 'Options' selection - click the right "-" button to go into this option. You should then see the "Format Card" option. Click "OK" to format your card. This will create folders on your memory card. After the card is formatted, put the card in your card reader and copy your mp3 fils to the mp3 music folder that was created.

Jake -
Per my original note, you have to format your card in your phone first, then copy you mp3 songs to the mp3 music folder that gets created per the formatting. If you copy the music directly to the card, the phone will not see the songs.

yeah i formatted the card for the phone but it still wont let me put mp3s into the folder. i have an sd slot on my computer so i use that to transfer. the pictures worked, i could transfer pictures back and forth but not mp3s...

Thomas Magee Jan 02 2006

Kyle W -

It may be the 'format' of your mp3's. I found today that some mp3's that I put on the disk would not play on the phone, yet they work via WinAmp just fine.

So, I get the MP3 from the beginning. I must have lucked into making it work. My friggin problem is that it only sorts the songs my track # and not album.. So, if I have, say, 4 CD's on my stick, it has all 4 song # 1's then all 4 song #2's. Kinda sucks. Is there a way to get it to organize them my Artist and not Track #?

Marcelo Jan 09 2006

To answer all of your comments once and for all:
I have the vx8100 & I've been playing all my mp3s perfectly. First of all, yes format the card on your phone. Make sure you have SW version (you can get to this by hitting menu/go to settings & tools/system/device info/sw version) T81VZV04. If you have 02 or anything other than 04, YOU CANNOT PLAY MP3S. Now format the card by menu/settings & tools/system/manage memory/card memory/options(right soft key)/format card, or for you dumbasses, insert the card, then turn off the phone then on again. If you have a mac, I can't help you unfortunately. If you have a pc w/ windows 2001 and have recorded mp3s insert card into card reader/go to start/my mp3s/right click on the song you want/"send to"(usually it's g:drive, if you don't know what drive, you have no business attempting this-ask your local geek)/once you have your playlist all sent to the card go to start/my computer/open g:drive or whatever drive the card is in/you should see the card menu-"My Pix, My Flix, My MP3, My sounds"/under "My Sounds" you should see all your songs, simply drag the songs into "My MP3". Once all songs are in "My MP3", you can rename them by double-clicking on the title so that you can sort them by artist. What I mean is you pick the order by renaming the track number. Let's just say, one of your song's name is "04 Gasolina"(or whatever retarded song is popular right now)but you want it played as the 10th song. Rename it "10 Gasolina". Another way the player sorts by artist is if you use the shuffle feature(right soft key while MP3s are playing). If you're using Windows Media Player, make sure when you rip music, it is ripped in MP3 format. Not wav format. To do this open Windows Media/maximise it(hit the square in the upper-righthand corner b/w the underscore and the "X")/go to options/go to"rip" folder/in the middle of the screen there should be wav or mp3 highlighted, if mp3 isn't highlighted, select mp3/hit ok/ rip the songs you want from your cds/ now go to the sync tab on top/edit the playlist you want/go to start sync on the upper right/once it is finished go to start/my computer/open g:drive or whatever drive the card is in/you should see the card menu-"My Pix, My Flix, My MP3, My sounds"/under "My Sounds" you should see all your songs, simply drag the songs into "My MP3". Now remove the card and insert it into the phone. Once inside the phone, press and hold the play button on the outside of the phone. Your list should appear, if not, e-mail me @ sgtpeppersband9@yahoo.com. After you see the list, press play again. Enjoy. If you found my description of the song Gasolina to be offensive, direct all comments to the wall in front of you and try and increase your i.q. to where it isn't equivalent to a rattle. Voila!(That one's for you, buster. Be more patient w/ people, you'll be alot happier)You're welcome.

mike Jan 29 2006

if i have sw version t81vzv06, does that mean i can not put songs on my phone? in any format? why would verizon do an update from one that played mp3's to one that cant!?

dburn Jan 31 2006

No problem formatting the card, but when i try to drag the songs to the MP3 folder and i drop them in it says "Cannot copy ... The disk is write-proected. Remove write protection or use another disk"
Verizon claims the card is bad, or the songs are write protected to protect piracy. I told Verizon I owned the cd's, and that there was nothing wrong with the card, because it formats, and files are added. They have no answer other than, did you buy the card from Whorizon, or is the card reader from Whorizon.. Please help, what's up with the card write protection? I have SW version 4 on my VX8100.

I formatted the card with the phone but it only shows 3 folders not four. Is it because it was formated by the computer at first, and reformatted with the phone? Can anyone help ?

Thanks

Jeff Feb 07 2006

so my sw version is T81VZV06 is it still possible to play MP3's??? ive done everything that has been posted and that is the only thing that is different.

DJ Feb 08 2006

I used some of the information posted to get my mp3 to work on my phone and it worked. Now my problem is that my computer won't let me open the folders on the card because it says that it has to be formatted. I tried to format it but it says windows cannot format. So now I can't do anything with it and I dont know what to do.
Can someone please help me?

dave Feb 08 2006

Ok. After several hours of scouring the net, here is how I got my MP3 player to work on the VX8100. I put bits and pieces from different forums together. You must first enable MP3 capability. If this is not enabled, you will not see a MY_MP3 folder when the mini-sd card is formatted. This is the problem I kept encountering and couldn't find any way to get the MP3 folder to show on the mini-SD card. Here is what was done:

Enabling MP3

Menu
0
000000 (when the ?????? is displayed)
11 (Music Settings)
MP3 Enable

Formatting mini-SD

Settings and Tools
4 (System)
4 (Manage Memory)
3 (Card Memory)
Options (lower right corner)
1 (Format Card)

Enabling PLAY Shortcut Key (front panel)

Settings and Tools
1 (Tools)
3 (Shortcut Key)
2 (Play Key)
My MP3s

Ok. That is it. Now remove your mini-SD card, insert into your favoriate card reader and PC. Copy the MP3 files to the MY_MP3 folder on the mini-SD card. Insert mini-SD card back in to your VX8100 and enjoy all of your songs.

I hope this helps you all out and good luck. The is absolutely zilch for documentation from Verizon on how to use the MP3 player. They stress using WMA files via VCAST.

Mike Feb 09 2006

Damn, that helps a lot. I just got my 8100 last week and I was told the MP3 player would never work and that the model I had wouldn't. Well with dave's instructions I got it working perfectly. Thanks much.

Ryan Feb 12 2006

Exactly what I needed, Dave, thanks!!

Josh, perhaps Dave's directions are only for SW version 06 or higher? Do you know, Dave? I have SW version 06 and your directions worked perfectly!

Mitch Feb 17 2006

Thanks Dave that worked

goose Feb 18 2006

One note that I just discovered....at least for me on my 8100 (with a 512M memory card) the mp3's must be 128k encoded mp3's...nothing else seems to work.

mike Feb 18 2006

okay...i read pretty much all of these, and i have to say so far dave helped the most..i only have a 128 mb but it seems to be sufficient...but im still having a little problem transfering the MP3 to the card...i have all of the folders listed, including the MP3 one, but it wont let me choose a folder to put it into. It just automatically adds it to the bottom of the card below all the folders, and i cant drag and drop it in a folder either. Im using Windows Media Player to do this all, and im wondering if there is a better way? can any one help? my email is cmcyclones19@aol.com...plz help.

ps. also, through my experimenting with all of this, i checked the space on my card and every time i try to add something and it didnt work, it still used up space. I was wondering if any one knew how to delete stuff off of the card?

mike Feb 19 2006

does anyone know how to change the bit rate of songs? if so either post the answer, cuz im sure other people will have that problem, or email me @ cmcyclones19@aol.com...thanx

Casey Feb 19 2006

Ok I have my SD mini card and everything but everytime I try to transfer something I get "Cannot copy ... The disk is write-proected. Remove write protection or use another disk" which makes no sense because I'm trying to copy off my cds! Can anyone help?

M Feb 26 2006

okay i have a different question.
i got the MP3s to work. but this is about pix/flix messages.

i was able to see them when they were sent to me, but now when i go to open any, it says 'failed to play video' even if it's a picture. & idk why.

how do i get it to show me them?

PUNiSH3R Feb 28 2006

MP3 enabling (a'la menu>0>000000>11>enable) is valid, even after the 1/16/06 switch to WMA format. For those of you who do not wish to screw with the settings, utilizing a program like Sound Forge you can convert formats and bitrates. To the best of my knowledge, once you enable MP3 playback, the bitrate limit is 320K *at least it used to be*. I have 160K MP3's on my card, and they play just fine.

AFTER THE 1/16/06 SWITCH TO V CAST, 8100 UTILIZES 64K WMA FORMAT AS DEFAULT. Higher bitrates WILL work in WMA format without enabling MP3 playback. I have tested as high as 160k with no problems. You MUST format the card ON THE PHONE FIRST (menu>Settings>4>4>3>Options>Format)in order to use it with a card reader on your computer.

In regards to video, the format for the VX8100 is either *.3g2 or *.3gp
This format is viewable with Apple Quicktime versions 7 and above. You can also convert other formats to 3gp using any of a number of available converters (I personally would recommend ImToo 3GP Converter)

Email punish3r@softhome.net with questions about process, not about program/file locations.

britt Mar 08 2006

okey after you format your card how do u transfer the songs to your mp3 file and where do u get them from?

luis Mar 08 2006

how do i get mp3 on my vx8100?? i got front buttons and dont know how to use them

Rob Waight Mar 13 2006

You need to format your MiniSD card on your phone before you can load MP3's onto it. Once it is formatted, get a card reader and then load MP3's from your computer to your card (just copy and paste them if you wish), make sure you put the MP3's in the MP3 folder. Put the card back in your phone and then hold the play/pause button for 2 seconds. If anyone is interested, I switched to Sprint and am selling my VX8100, I bought it in October and can't use it with Sprint. If you are interested email me at rew2003@hotmail.com.

I'm back. For all of you who have had problems w/ mp3s on this phone, it may be b/c the new software only plays wma files. Or you're blind!!! Hello! A retarded monkey could follow my directions! Why did Verizon make the phones only play wmas? Because obviously simply syncing a card is too much for your limited cognitive capacity. I posted info on how to get music on the new software handsets on the samsung a950 forum.

I have an LG 9800. When I go to format my mini sd, its says formatting failed. What could possibly be the problem?

robotbawk Mar 21 2006

For all those who got "disk is write protected" - you can LOCK your miniSD card when it's in the bigger SD adapter sleeve (if you have that, mine came with it) - slide the tiny little white switch on the card and try it again. It might have been locked before you got it.

cole Mar 24 2006

question for dave, i did what u said to do and it worked, but if i go to verizon with a problem with my phone, can they tell i messed with those settings and void the warranty or no?, and btw... THAT YOU SO MUCH FOR THAT HELP! i spent 40 bucks on the card and reader and thought that i should just cut my losses and call it a day, and right before i closed this window i found ur help, but if u could send ur answer to laxdrummer04@gmail.com that would kick ass, THANKS AGAIN!

Kris Mar 25 2006

Ron Stopable Mar 29 2006

I have a verizon LG9800.

Thank you for the lock code.
Format still fails.
I have a SanDisk 2gb minisd card.

what format video does the phone play?
can i format movies and put them on my phone?

Brittany Mar 30 2006

So, I bought the phone yesterday, and they sold me a Kit with a usb cord to connect my phone to my pc. But when i do that, my pc says it can't detect a portable device. it also says, "Windows Media Player cannot access the file. The file might be in use, you might not have access to the computer where the file is stored, or your proxy settings might not be correct." Is there anything i can do, or is it just best to buy a Sd mini adaptor??

Megan Apr 07 2006

I just want to say thanks to Dave for posting the best how-to I've read on the internet. I've been racking my brain on how to play my MP3s and Verizon just tells you that you cant, it only plays WMAs. HaHa Verizon!! WooHoo!

heather Apr 10 2006

If I record a sound under my sounds how can i use that as my ringer?!?!?!

Brian Apr 11 2006

I would also like to say thanks Dave for the input

Ed Bindler Apr 14 2006

According to Verizon I was supposed to be adequately warned that my vx8100 would no longer play mp3's.

Ahem, thank you Verizon, it wasn't until I received a replacement phone and found that my mp3's didn't play and several calls and visits to your stores that I found out that I could only play WMA's.

Thank you Dave for the instructions to put it back into MP3 mode!

According to Verizon, Microsoft had no bearing on the change. Yeah, right...

Steven Apr 15 2006

Hi everybody
I am having trouble w/ the video playback from the minisd card. I have formatted the card and it plays the mp3's and wma music, but I can't get my video's that I have on the card to play. I have the converter to put them into .3gp format. The phone will show the file as a playable one but it will just sit there without starting and showing 00:00 on the playback time. I tried to talk to verizon tech support @ the store, I was better off talking to a wall. Then I tried speaking w/ there on the phone tech support (useless) they told me that it was impossible I had to buy there vcast and download only there videos, surprise they want more money from me.
Please can someone please help me with this problem, I know its possible because other people on forums say it is but won't tell me how.
Thanks in advance God Bless

Bill Apr 19 2006

If you are having a problem with songs transferring from your computer but not appearing on the your phone's list of songs, here is a hint. We had a problem and called Verizon and they said that songs with really long titles or names, will not appear. Just right click on the song on your computer and rename it to a shorter title and it should work.

Hope this is helpful.

Bill

piefka Apr 28 2006

Thanx DAVE!!! The length of the name of the mp3 was the problem, I was checking bit rates, reformatting files. Thinking way too advanced. Wow, something as simple as length of name.

LLL OOO OOO K K

I found out what the problem is with mp3s! first you must format your miniSD like stated in some posts above, but some versions can play mp3s and some can't. For those who can't play mp3s, WINDOWS MEDIA PLAYER files will work.

Nick May 11 2006

All you have to do on the lg 8100 is rename the song so it is small enough so it works it took me almost a week to figure it out for example if you have a song that says bowwow with omarion let me hold you rename it to let me hold you and it will work.
thanks craig

Gene Jun 01 2006

anyone have an update on Verizon's/LG's "promise" to offer a software update that would allow the use of 2.0 GB mini SD card for the 8100. I spoke with a representative from VZ and he told me it was coming "any day now". I think that was about 3 months ago. Would appreciate any information!!

Thanks!

Ben Jun 02 2006

A lot of people have asked how to put videos. You need to convert the videos to 3gp or 3g2 format! MP2, MP4, AVI files, etc. will not work!

Go search on Google "avi to 3gp" or something. =)

saro Jun 03 2006

I am have little problem. I format the sd card once and once,If i download 4 songs inside the sd card, appears 2 in the phone, and if i download 12 appears 9 or 10, never appears all i have inside the sd card.
I appreciated any information.

kyro Jun 05 2006

***ATTENTION***

If your LG vx8100 phone does not come with the mp3 option, there are a few easy steps to access it.
1)go to the main menu, then press zero "0"
2)your phone will then ask you for a service code,...press zero six times.
3)then go to the "music setting" option, which is the last one, then choose, "enable mp3"

that is all it takes, but "WARNING", do not mees around with that hidden menu, it could screw up your phone.

Timmmah Jun 05 2006

Have you all heard of BitPim?

It's a program that you can use on your computer that will convert any wav/mp3/etc file into a ringtone, and then upload it to your computer (provided it's connected via a USB cable, of course)!

http://www.bitpim.org/

It will also archive your phone book/call lists, messages, and pics/wallpapers.

You can convert existing pics on your computer into wallpapers, as well.

Pretty cool program...and I'm not having to pay anyone for the ringtones that >>>I<<< want!

(Oh, you can also edit any mp3/wav, etc file so you can just use the portion of it that you want for your ringtone!)

Tim Jun 08 2006

I have read most all of the instructions. I got much further with these over anything VZW would give me. However, I cannot get my PC to recognize that the mini SD card is in the card reader. I know the card reader works with the SD card my camera uses. I have gone thru the format procedure with the mini SD in the phone. I would appreciate any help anyone can give me.

Siriana Jun 08 2006

Having the same problem as Tim, card reader won't detect the mini-sd with mini to full size sd adapter. My other full size sd cards work fine on the card reader, but it's not detecting the mini-sd.

Siriana Jun 09 2006

One more thing, my card is a 2gb card, and when i format on the phone it only formats 1gb of it. I tried transferring mp3s from bitpim, but it's slow and doesn't show up on the cell. It checks out on memory usage though, just can't see the file.

When i take pics and save to the card, i can download it through bitpim. Haven't tried uploading pics by bitpim yet.

Wes Jun 10 2006

Thanks for the help with the MP3s Dave!

Anyone know what section of your phone you can see the MP3s, or can you just hit the play button on front fro two secs to play them?

Also, can I use these MP3s as my ringtone?

Thanks!

animal Jun 10 2006

to get the mp3 player to work you get the memory card and put it into the card reader which is plugged in to your usb port(only works with xp) after you download the songs on the pc you send the songs to your e:drive or whatever it may be that will be the memory card for your phone. after you put all the songs on there you have to click on the drive you sent the songs to. that will bring a menu up for mp3 then drag the songs into the file. after that take the card out of the reader. turn the phone off and put the card in. turn on phone and go to get tones and tunes your mp3 player should come up( make sure you turn the phone off if this is the first time you put your card in or it wont work).....and for the buttons to work on the front just for mp3 just hold the play button down for a few seconds and it should pop up...if this doesnt work take your phone in for an upgrade but it really shouldnt need to be upgraded. ive had my vx8100 for over a year and no new upgrades are available. animal...

Siriana Jun 10 2006

Something is wrong with the mini-sd to sd adapter card adapter that came with my card. My sd card reader can't access the mini-sd with the adapter. Doesn't see the card.

I'm able to use the mini-sd on the phone though. Just have to erase the my_mp3.dat on bitpim after transferring mp3s through bitpim. But extremely slow, need a new card reader with a mini-sd slot, without adapters.

Wes Jun 10 2006

Thanks Animal the MP3 menu is there now - funny thought I turned off my phone before, but guess I didn't. I am guessing that no one out there knows how to set your MP3s as your ringtone? If you have any ideas please post or email me (posting is probally better so that it can help more peeps) Thanks All!

Tim Jun 13 2006

OK I am still frustrated with all of this. I cannot get my card reader to recognize that the mini SD card is there. Any suggestions?

mike Jun 13 2006

2gb cards do not work in LG9800, you need to go buy a 1gb. This was from sandisk tech support.

Tim Jun 13 2006

My card is a 1 gb. My card reader is a SanDisk and I have tried using the mini SD card with the adaptor and have tried putting the mini SD directly into that slot on the reader. My PC recognizes the card reader, but does not recognize that the card is in place. My phone is an LG VX8100.

jamie Jun 13 2006

is there a way to make folders for you mp3's on the lg8100 or do you just have to scroll through them.

i would like to know how to make mp3s my ringtones. anyone know how to? animal

i got it!

Diane Jun 15 2006

How can I remove a write protection on my mini sd. My card did not use to be like that , but now it wont let me drag files over to my card. Can anyone help?

Dylan Jun 17 2006

Ok, I am sick of hearing, "The front bottons just do not work." Listen, they do. If you have music on your phone, just hold the play/pause button until you see the name of your song on the front screen. You can there, change songs using the |>| buttons.

patsi Jun 18 2006

Can someone please email me the directions also.

saro_f@yahoo.com Jun 22 2006

Need information. I format my 1gb mini sd, once and once, if i download 100 mp3 songs, why always apears 70 mp3 songs on the phone, is it normal. When i open the mini sd in my reader apears my 100 mp3 ......magic.....or what....please need information....

illlogic Jun 25 2006

In response to saro_f's question about only 70 songs showing when you load 100, I've experimented and found that if you rename the songs and take out all punctuation (commas, quotes, etc.) out of the song name, the song names should then show. I haven't figured out exactly which punctuation marks mess it up and I think dashes- are okay, but you just kinda gotta take out unnecessary punctuation.
Thanks.

John Jun 25 2006

calvinross Jul 01 2006

hey everyone

I have a 1 gig san disk mini sd card and a mobile mate usb 2.0 reader. I have done absolutley eveythin possible with this phone from every single blog in every different possible oreder at least 15-20 times. I have put the files in the mp3 folder, i have formatted and reformatted my phone countless times and have followed directions step by step to the T. today i went into verizon and even got an update and still nothing. My only conclusion to the problem is that it may be converted on the card in the wrong format...possibly WMA or WAV... but windows media player 10, which i have, gives no explanation on which format it is currently in or how to convert the files to a different format... I am seriously pissed because i have just bought an sd card and converter worth around 90$ and have put days of research into this phone...i am about ready to take it outside and strap an m80 to it if i cant get it to work soon. even the techs dont know whats up. If anybody has any information regarding the phone or a method/player that will successfully convert my files to the right format, a.k.a mp3, please contact me with the info at calvinrossbarnes@aim.com. As soon as possible please before my phone ends up strapped to half a stick of dynamite. Thanks

calvinross Jul 01 2006

so check it
all my music, to my recent knowledge of simply putting the cursor on a song, is in WMA format...there in lies my problem. I have read, from an excerpt written by marcelo a while back, that you have to recopy your cds in mp3 format. Though in itself this is very possible...that is alot of music to recopy...days worth actually. does anybody know a method in which to convert WMA files to MP3 files on windows media player 10 without having to recopy all my music? calvinrossbarnes@aim.com

thanks

Ed K. Jul 11 2006

I notice that a lot of you are having trouble with the write protection on your mini disks. I'd been having that problem and just figured out the issue. The adapter into which I've been putting my mini card is so cheap that whenever I slide it into the reader, the little tab slides down to the write protect position. I discovered this when I noticed that whenever I pulled it out, it was in the down, rather than up, position. Solved the problem by putting a little piece of tape on it (being sure not to cover the other tab position or the little gold connectors). Good luck.

jerry Jul 12 2006

Just got off with verizon. trying to tell me that my kingston 1gb minisd card may be teh problem and they have no answers. I tried 2 cards and after formatting 3 folders will ppear on my computer but no mp3 file. I can drag music onto disc but not into a folder and when i press the play button on my screen no mp3 player comes up. I am using a usb gadget and have an 8100 phone. Any advice. Is there any upgrades i need or missing something? I will go nuts on verizon if they screwed me into a phone that doesnt do what they claimed it did......Kinston is a good disc company. are any of you using kingston discs?

Your GOD! Jul 12 2006

People this is how you get the mp3's to work, follow carefully. This is stuff Verizon won't tell you because they want you to buy their music.

First of all, this is assuming everyone has a mini sd card/sd reader. If you don't you can get them at Best Buy for pretty cheap. I got my 1gb off Amazon for $35. Plus $15 for the reader/writer.

SD Card Formatting Instructions:

1. Insert card into phone.
2. Go to "Settings & Tools"
3. Go down to number 4 "System"
4. Then 4 again "Manage Memory"
5. Then "Card Memory"
6. Hit the right arrow "options"
7. Then format card.
8. Your code is the last 4 numbers of your phone number.
9. Then yes to format.
10. BOOM!

MP3 Enabling Instructions:

1. Press Menu
2. Press "0" 7 times to access the service features. (this is what Verizon won't tell you)
3. Go down to Number 11 - Music Settings.
4. Enable MP3.
5. Then go to "Tools"
6. Go down to "Shortcut Key"
7. Then down to 2. Play Key
8. Then hit the second choice, "My MP3's"
(This will enable you to use the front mp3 player)

Then insert your card into your reader, open up My Computer and double click whatever letter the reader is, mine is "H:". Then you have directories, drag and drop mp3's into the "MY_MP3" folder. Once done insert card into phone. Then hold front panel play/pause button for 2 seconds. Your mp3's will come up.

Closing Notes:
- MP3 player must be enabled before formatting so you get the "MY_MP3" directory.

Thank you and God bless.

ATTENTION: Anyone having trouble with the "write protection", look on the left side of you mini sd adapter and turn the switch up. It will take the write protection error off!

Is it possible to make music playlists (LG VX8100), or can we only play all the songs on the card at a time? Thanks

Is there any way to make mp3's/wma's that you have on ur memory card into ringtones for the phone or ringer IDs? I know you need to have it to the phone memory so is there a way to transfer/copy music from memory card to the phones memory. Send directions/suggestions to clance227@cox.net

billy Aug 12 2006

thank you dave and thanks for this site
mine works great now.

Luke Aug 16 2006

i was wondering if anyone figured out if and how you can create subfolders in the MP3 folder itself. I would want to use this for the different artists so they all arent just one group of songs together.

Troy Aug 19 2006

A friend of mine has the red Samsung phone from Verizon and it has a complete playlist/MP3 player style on it where you can sort the MP3s by artist, genre, etc. and there is even a separate feature for shuffle. It's like having a fully featured MP3 player. I have the LG VX8100. Does anyone know if I can get these great features? Or am I stuck with having a list that I need to thumb through each time I want to hear songs? Thanks! troyc1@cox.net

PLEASE READ
===========

***ANY HELP IS GREATLY APPRECIATED***

I read the message from above from "YOUR GOD" on how to format the disk, i did all of that and when i plug the disk into the USB device and into the computer it says:

The disk in drive F: is not formatted.
Do you wish to format it now?

I click YES and then START... it scans it for about 4 seconds and then says:

Windows was unable to complete the format.

Its at this point that i am tempted to kill somebody or possibly myself. Please help me!!!

Thank you very much...

If you are still having problems with write protection, and are putting the miniSD in the card reader directly (without the adapter), make sure it is perfectly straight. I kept putting mine in just slightly crooked, and it gave me the write protected error. I took it out and put it in very carefully, and it worked.

John Aug 28 2006

I NO WHAT THE PROBLEM IS FOR THE RIGHT PROTECTION!
SEEE THE LITTLE GRAY THING ON THE LEFT SIDE OF THE CARD ADAPTER.... PUSH IT SO IT IS NOT ON LOCK.
THERE U GO!

ok I love this phone now that I have got all this going on it now, stopped paying the 15 bucks a month for vcast cuz you do not need it to play music or mp3 even though verizon tells you that you do. So if you read this whole page you will learn how to make mp3s to ringtones on your phone with "bitpim" its very easy. also transfer all your videos pics and anything off your phone to your pc. Also how to change your phone that verizon told you that you can not play mp3s on so you can very easily. Just buy the minisd card and a card usb card reader\writer 5 bucks on ebay. format the card and then put in the reader and then plug into your pc and drag all your mp3s to the my mp3 folder and put back in the phone and you have all your mp3s there, obvioulsy you need to read above on how to change the music settings in the phone to play mp3s but it is very easy as well. SO no I get all the free ringtones and play mp3s on my phone and I am not paying verizon one extra cent. So that rules
the only problem I am having now and I cant seem to find anyone who has solved this yet
how can you copy videos to your phone so you can watch them on the phone.
I have tried converting avi mpg4 all the video formats to 3g2 or 3gp and then copied them to the card and the phone sees them but doesnt play them.
if anyone has had any sucess with this myself and I am sure most of us would love to hear it
thanks

OK SECRET PHONE MENU hit menu and press 0
then press 0 6 more times, scroll down to 11 and make sure mp3 is enabled.
put ur card into the card reader, drag mp3 to mp3 folder, wma to my music, 3gp/3g2 to my flix, jpeg to my pix

I highly recommend using bitpim, you can add free ringers, and many other features; works through bluetooth or data cable

its not that hard.

okay someone please help me.
Today my phone screen just happened to break. I take it in to the verizon store so they can fix it. They come back with the news that they have to give me a new phone but same model. I am okay with that thinking that everything will be the same. I get my phone back and instead of an mp3 playlist where I can download music to my card. I get this totally different thing called "my music" and I have to now buy a usb cable to put music on my phone. The thing is, I don't have a slot for a usb cable to go in to in my phone. Please help.

Steve Oct 13 2006

VERIZON SALESMAN - Thanks for taking the time to post the step-by-step directions for setting up the LG8300 to accept mp3 through a USB memory card reader.

Verizon has buried the setup so deep in the software that nobody would find it without proper documentation.

Thanks again "GOOD GUY" from Verizon.
