it's just a O.K phone not the greatest.

There are a few issues that the new (Cingular)
Samsung D407 has. When you copy your contacts
from the Sim Card to the Phone memory you then
have duplicate entries for every contact
in your contact list. There is presently no fix
for this. Samsung and Cingular both told me to
just erase the SIM card. Gee, theres great idea!
Why would i then need a Sim card? If you want
to add custom ring tones and pics to your contacts,
they need to be in the phone's memory. Also if
you do erase your contacts off of your SIM be
prepared for this. There is no way to batch copy
the contacts from the phone's memory to the SIM.
You need to copy each contact one at a time. That
can be a real pain if you have a lot of telephone
numbers in your contact list. The phone can
batch copy from the SIM to the phone but not from
the phone to the SIM. Another issue lies in the
text messaging. Everytime you insert punctaution
anywhere when you reply text message the cursor returns
to the top of the message. If you text a lot, that
can be very frustrating. My friend also bought a
Sasung D407 and has the same issues. Both Cingular
and Samsung were very rude and not helpful at all.
I just want everyone to know about these issues so
they don't get stuck with a phone that clearly
has a software and/or firmware problem.

Besides the above issues, it is a very nice phone.
The PTT works great. You do not need to open the
lid at all to make a normal phone call or a PTT call.
It has voice reconition that is very accurate and a
decent quality speakerphone. Also, Cingular does
not include a USB cable. The Phone also has bluetooth.
Samsung has an app free for download (Samsung PC Studio 3).
You can take any mp3 or wav clip and transfer it to your
phone via blutooth or usb and use it as a ring tone.
Cingular won't tell you this because they want you to
keep shelling out 3-$5 for a ring tone and also pay
for the bandwidth to download it. Why would you do
that when you can buy a whole song for .99 ?

In conclusion, I don't think that i will ever purcahes
another Samsung product. They were made aware of the
problem and they refuse to do anything about it. The
same goes for Cingular. They are both aware that a phone
they are selling has a software and/or firemware problem and
they just don't care. I forgot to mention that Samsung also
told me that if i would like to try and research the problem and
fix it myself, i am more than welcome to. The tech rep at Samsung
also told me that i should start by contacting their friends in Korea
that wrote the firmware. This should tell everyone what kind of
companies they are dealing with when it comes to Samsung and Cingular.
The Samsung D407 was clearly not ready to go market.

I just bought the d407. it was cheap, had bluetooth and i'm impressed with the voice recognition.

Don Rutan, you have posted that same exact article on cnet, and mobiledia.com.

I just bought this phone and I cannot put it down. I love it!!

I would recommend it to anyone. Since I am the only one in my area besides 2 other people (people I don't conversate with) I haven't had a chance to try out the PTT. Every other function seems great. I was disappointed in the camera and the screen for a samsung I was expecting better, but everything else is perfect. Better reception than my RAZR believe it or not!

Rachel Aug 16 2006

I have to agree with Don Rutan entirely.

This phone is frustrating!

Rachel:

So what is YOUR beef with the phone? Be specific.
I find YOU to be frustrating.

And Don:

Get a grip. What's this crossposting? Are you being paid by LG to diss other phones? What you call a "problem" is likely an intended design feature.

You don't like it? Design your own friggin phone.
Why is a big company like samsung going to change their entire product stragegy for you? Sure they might take what you have to say in consideration for FUTURE phones, but this phone is released. If you don't like the feature set, BUY ANOTHER PHONE.

I find there are things I don't like with most phones. And yes, it sucks. Manufactureres are often putting in more features than the average person wants. I want a cool design, long battery life, good reception. AND THAT'S IT!

But every time they come up with a new design, they try to load it with new features like video and music players I don't need.

But this is their own MARKETING DECISION.

At least there is competition in the phone world.

I have the D407 and I love it..It has all of the features I like such as speakerphone, PTT, and voice recognition. The sound quality for the speakerphone and ringtones when it rings is very high quality. It also has video which is alright also. I am very impressed and the price is unbelieveable. It was very cheap because excluding the rebate it was $30!!!!!! I love it and it looks cool too!!!! I was going toward a RAZR but Im glad I got this. I'd recommend it to anybody.

Anonymus Sep 09 2006

I just got this phone a week ago and i love it ... everyday i find out some new feature in it.
The only thing that i probalby don't like is that the buttons on the sides are too easily pressed .... but you can lock them. the phone has very good battary life and good ringtones also.
the vedio is fair same as the camera. the reseption is good too!!
I give this phone a 9.2 out of 10!!!!!

I have a question about this phone. Is the voice recognition integrated with the phone as in the Motorola phones or do you need to add the service from Cingular to get voice recognition. It seems that most listing of features and reviews do not differentiate between the two variations of voice activation but I prefer the integrated version of the service type.

This phone is great! The Sim card is frustrating, but I don't use it much, so I'm not having much trouble.

Great phone!

I can not get my phone play the ring tone and vibrate at the same time. When the ringer is on and the phone is set to vibrate all........only the ring tone sounds. When I turn the ringer off, that's the only time I can get the vibration to work. I just thought that's how the phone was made, until I saw my coworkers phone. She has the exact same phone and it rings and vibrates at the same time. I've went to the FAQ on this phone and held the # key for 2 seconds. This only gives me a ring in one mode and the vibration in the other mode. Not both together. I noticed in the upper right corner of my coworkers display is a small red note key with red squiggly lines under it. I can't get this feature to appear on my phone. All I can get is the red squiggly lines with a crossed out speaker symbol (which is only vibrate). When holding down the # key for 2 seconds, they both disappear and my phone then only rings. this is very annoying because I would like my phone to ring and vibrate at the same time. That when when I'm in my car I can feel the phone vibrate in my pocket if I can't hear the phone ring.
