Kyocera Oystr launched by Virgin Mobile

Jul 26 2006 - 03:29 PM ET | Virgin Mobile

kyocera oysterVirgin Mobile has launched the Kyocera Oyster, an entry-level handset with a pearl white exterior. The Oyster continues a recent trend of phones taking on real names (LG Chocolate, Sanyo Katana, Kyocera Strobe, etc) instead of more cryptic product codes that were the industry norm.

Features of the Kyocera Oyster include:

  • 128×128 65k color screen
  • Speakerphone
  • Real music ringtones

Virgin Mobile is charging $29.99 for the Oyster, no contract is required. It's available now either online or in retail stores such as BestBuy and Target.

Advice from a bunch of illiterate 8-year-olds with self-esteem problems. How helpful.

AJ Aug 14 2006

Im about to buy this phone tommorow.

Lauren Aug 17 2006

My friend recently bought the Oyster and for only $30 it seems like a pretty great deal. The pay-as-you-go for 18 cents a minue isn't so appealing, but the $7 a month for 10 cents a minute doesn't sound so bad. I plan on purchasing an Oyster sometime this week. I'll update you later.

bradifer Aug 19 2006

The phone's good for basic cell stuff & a great price. The BIG problem is the battery life is awful! They say 8 days standby. Hah! If you don't recharge every night you got a dead phone in your pocket the next day. Come on guys, you could do better than that. No vibrate then ring feature either. So, watch out. By the way, if youre a chatterbox & love to be seen talking on your cell, then the pay per minute plans are all wrong for you. Virgin has their stuff together. Just get a pre-paid monthly plan if youre on all the time. Light users take the minutes. It beats the heck out of paying $50/month to the big boys.

KiaYanna Aug 20 2006

Ive been peepin dis phone for the last 2 weeks. Im still deciding if I should get it or not. My sister says its ugly and she doesnt like it. I kinda like it but i still wanna know if i should get dis or not what do yall think?

Walil Aug 21 2006

I have this phone for sell at $ 19.99. Visit us at www.CC-FS.com

Pazu_84 Aug 21 2006

Look i use to be a T-Mobile member, until my chip gave out,but k,heres the scoop.i just got this phone.the plan is well(shity).you pay somuch a month, and if you dont use the time oh well you loss it at the end of the month,or if you miss a payment you have 2 months to git time on it or they shut you down ,and you loss your number.Load time sucks.the speakers give out alot, and the reseption area is horrible .and yes it plays real music but only 27 secounds worth, their list of games are very very limited.and as for the sound recorder,it does not work as good as advertised.(this phone is not for people who injoy talking at all.the phone gives out like that.and the selcetion of wall papers look as if it was disighed by a bunch of sex hungry crack addicts,on the other hand its small, cheap and the plan is affordable.and the screen is well colored an lights up well, but im going off to school so i dont need a big hunk of tech.(this phone is for people who dont like to talk alot but still need it.)but then agin what do you exspect out of a 30$ phone((im thinking im going back to T-Mobile.))

Darrel Harrow Aug 22 2006

I purchased an Oyster last week (8/15) and am returning it today as it does not hold a charge.
Very upsetting as they say standby time should be 6-7 days.
Not sure if I'm going to get another Oyster, probably not due to the advice given by the 'normal' posters on this site.
Just wanted to let others know tis phone is not reliable re: battery life.

better to be pis*** than pis***-on Aug 23 2006

Whadda want for a $30 phone, you foul mouthed SOB!

jimmy Aug 25 2006

If you use a cell phone as a tool of convenience and not as a substitute for intelligence, eloquence, sexual prowess or the side effects of teen angst that go along with living in the suburbs wishing you could be a gangster, and mommy and daddy not letting you get your drivers license until your grades improve, then Virgin Mobile is a nice way to go. I have used their service without much of an issue for over two years.
That being said, the Oystr has been a huge disappointment. It goes from a full charge to nearly dead inside of 24hrs with little or no use. I have noticed a couple of possible reasons for the quick battery drain, and have a support email into Kyocera to see if this might be a problem with a few phones or all of them. The issues are as follows:
1. when the phone is closed, the backlight on the main screen will come on and stay on after the number of seconds that you have selected for your keypad backlight duration (if the duration is set for 7 seconds, the screen will come on 7 seconds after the phone is closed). Setting the duration to "disabled" fixes this issue, but it also means you can't see your keypad in the dark.
2. if the volume buttons on the side of the phone are pressed with the phone closed, the backlights on the screen and the keypad will come on and stay on indefinitely or until you open and close the phone again. The only fix I've noticed for this is turning the phone off, which pretty much makes it useless.
If Kyocera can't help me, I will probably just spring the extra 20 bucks for the Motorola phone which is the next up the ladder at $49.99.

Gene Aug 26 2006

New Virgin Mobile plans are COOL!
I love my new Oyster except for the battery! I am having success keeping battery life OK during the day by manipulating settings(and my mouth is not glued to the phone); The Way I use the phone -- It will work for me. BUT Jimmy please post KYOCERAs responce for any tips that will extend battery life.
Also...The reception is better than I thought it would be.
AND Here is a tip:
If you need to be reached in an emergency then have your loved ones know that they can get PAGES to you (pages use the SMS message system) where a signal might not reach them, like inside big buildings WALMART,TARGET,KMART ect...

NunofurBiz Aug 27 2006

Whatever people....do what you want. I just want to say that "customer service" at Virgin Mobile sucks donkey dicks!!! I swear the people there have to flunk 6th grade to get a job, Im sure thats 1 of their requirements!!! The phones are ok its the "lack of customer service" that has me pissed!! Virgin Mobile SUCKS!!!!

Valerie Aug 28 2006

I bought two Oystr phones at the same time, one for my husband and one for myself. In the past week they have been plugged in more than off the charger and I have yet to actually talk on the phone because number transferring delay from old carrier. But both the phones don't hold a charge over twenty-four hours on standby. Customer service keeps you on hold over ten minutes at a time and I've been disconnected twice after finally getting to a real person. I will send both phones back and purchase something else.

Dionysus Aug 29 2006

I have just purchased the Oystr for personal use. The very first thing I noticed is that it has just what I want ... no games, no downloading of music or streaming video. In other words, it's just a phone, to be used for talking to others, not for watching a rock concert. How refreshing! Go figure ... a phone that's just a phone.

The battery issue is kind of a pain. Jimmy, if you get any answers on this please let us know. Also, I never really cared for VM as a carrier since they use the PCS route (with no roaming), but I can adapt to that for only paying $30 for the phone. Plus this is a "for essential use only" phone, so no biggie. One observation, tho. I was going to order a spare battery and charger. But then I noticed that the battery goes for $10 more than the phone did, and the phone came with a battery. So I guess it's cheaper to buy a second phone, then keep the battery and pitch the phone. :)

OYSTRboy Aug 30 2006

Virgin Mobile's OYSTR is a fine phone if your battery life is not good remember any Virgin Mobile Phone comes with a one year warranty and they will exchange the phone at their cost. My sister switched to AMP Mobile and she's wishing she never left Virgin Mobile.

Rob Aug 31 2006

Same story, great phone for 30 bucks but a huge design flaw with the battery drain. 28 hours MAX. 8 DAYS OF STAND BY? IS THAT A JOKE? Perhaps some high paid decision maker at some lab was handed a demo with a battery that lasted 8 days so is could get approval for production, but that is not what we the people who are paying the price are receiving is it? Again, the phone design and uses are great but there is a flaw. WE purchase two phones for as needed use only. Having owned most of the VM phones we never had any that required this much charging. We also took no thought to discard the packaging or else we would return them immediately. I took the battery (same type) out of my other phone that I knew held charge 3 to 5 days , in the Oystr , same story. 28 hours max.

Amber Aug 31 2006

So guys, I bought this phone and just got it today and once opening it i realize that the battery life is ZERO. we can't get the battery inside the friggin phone. it's too big and so i call the customer service [which by the way sucks. who is this monique? or simone lip service?] and they say "are you sure you tried every way possible to fit the battery inside?" yes? why would i be calling you then? and then they hang up on us while my mom is looking for her credit card. we call again and this other lady says "oh we dont have that service that you were just fixing up in your last call" right. so even though the phone looks good and it seems like you all hate the battery slash battery life - i agree. the battery in general sucks. i think i'll be getting a different phone [since they dont believe me about the battery itself being too large. what was i trying to do? fitting in a brick?]

Shelby Sep 02 2006

Hey ! This phone looks pretty hott for thirty bucks I think I might go and buy it ! Pretty tight !

misty Sep 07 2006

The Oystr is a cheap phone but it has a decent speaker phone, excellent digital screen (colors are great), and a sturdy frame. It has all of the features that most more expensive phones have except for maybe picture-taking capabilities. Clarity is above average, signal is fine for me as I'm in a metro area and seems to be as good as any other carrier I've used. The battery life isn't so great, this is true. I charge it every chance I can. Best option? Purchase a car charger in case you use it a lot, especially if you are in the car quite a bit, and charge it some in the car. Also it is no big deal to charge it while you are sleeping, as you are in bed so what is the harm in that :-)). It's a decent phone and does the trick as good as most phones out there. Get one of the monthly plans, it's more bang for your buck.

jimmy Sep 07 2006

Well, charging it while you sleep is fine. Unless of course you end up crashing at a friends house or find yourself somewhere your wall charger isn't. And a car charger is always a good idea, but it's also an extra 25 bucks, and sort of defeats the purpose of going the cheap route with regard to cellular. Bottom line is that a phone with limited features that doesn't get used much should last at least three days on a charge. 24 hours is an outright insult with today's technology.
RE: the battery issue, Kyocera support proved themselves pretty much useless. Their suggested fix was to clean the battery terminals, and at that point I knew what I was dealing with: folks making about $3.50/hr to read off a trouble-shooting menu. The amount of complaints I have seen regarding the battery life, coupled with the fact that Bestbuy has recently discounted this phone to $19.99 (instant rebate) less than six months after the phone's release told me I should look elsewhere. So, I returned it and sprung the extra 20 bucks for the Audiovox. Not as cute, but seems to be of a little better quality (much higher resolution screen). Hopefully it will prove itself a little more reliable.

suck it Sep 09 2006

WOW i never realized how petty some people are. i mean i WAS gonna buy this phone but this made me realize that cell phones might not cause cancer, but still cause inflated egos to lame, spoiled, ass-kissing, daddy's dick sucking faggot-faced loosers whose only REAL problem is they WEREN'T BEAT enought as a child!

Art Sep 09 2006

I just got the Kyocera Oystr last week. I do not have the same battery problems I have heard others mention. Yes, it is true that after you close the lid, the screen backlight comes on, however, it does not stay on indefinetely. It will shut off after 90 seconds. Same thing if you press the volume button with the lid closed. I know this is a firmware problem, but at least it doesn't stay on all the time.
Although I do us my phone for what it is, a phone, I do like a decent screen and ring tones. The backgrounds, icons and screensavers that come standard with the oystr are the worst I've ever seen. Plan to spend a couple of bucks to get something decent.
For a basic phone, with no contracts, I think it is very good. I get great reception, and it sounds very clear and crisp. I would recommend the Oyste if you are looking for a basic functional phone. I have also called customer support before I purchased just to as some basic questions and had a very positive experience.

Any fucking reasone the message I posted Yesterday is not fucking listed.

Pissed Sep 09 2006

Virgin Mobile is total shit. Receiption is terrible where I live and Virgin Mobile will not even refund my money for service I can not use. This is a total joke and waste of your time

Pissed Sep 09 2006

Also customer service menu system is totally stupid. Takes forever to get through menu and even longer for customer service to get their thumb out of their arses. But make no mistake they will take money out of yur wallet real quick. Almost immediately. They will nickel and dime you to death. Virgin mobile website also seems crytic to me and is probably aimed at the crackhead whigger market.Virgin Mobile can suck my arse.

Rebecca Sep 11 2006

I just switched from Verizon In Pulse prepaid to Virgin because verizon prepaid charges a daily fee of 1 dollar whether u make any calls or not. And 1 dollar for the internet use for 24hrs which is optional. Virginmobile has what i needed a prepaid plan with out the daily fee and once again it has optional internet for 1 dollar a day. As far as im concerned for 30 dollars its not the hottest looking phone but im in it for the minutes and for 35 dollars a month i can surive financially since i provide for myself at 20.
What they shouldve added was a signal light on the corner so u can tell if there is any activity or not because of its white color i cannot tell if it vibrates or not. Ive put the power save mode on since ive got the dial pad practically memorized and i actually like the screensavers and the ringtones. I just wish there were more of them. What i dislike is that they ask ppl to have a 34.99 balance to get 1000 primetime minutes YET they only sell 20, 30 Or 40 dollar cards. It does take a long time to reach a representative but at least i got 1 who was nice enough to add 4.99 to my balance since i only got a 30 dollar card. Since i just switched ive yet to really experience the system but as far as im concerned this should work out for me. I can tell this system though is targeted towards a younger audience. lol which is odd...

Well guy, I have to give an apology regarding
Virgin Mobile. I sincerely did not think I would get a refund, but much to my surprise I did Indeed. Thanks, Virgin Mobile. Now I feel so bad I gave such a bad review.I quess it was just bad timing. I quess life's stesses kind of get bottle up inside of me and it comes out under certain circumstances. Reception was terrible where I live with this phone. I should have just taken a deep breath and chilled out.
Regards,

Viktor Sep 11 2006

I find the comments about how Virgin Mobile's support staff is run by idiots. We think the same things about you all :-p How hard is it to remember to Top-Up every 90 days? Why is it our falut you didn't pay your monthly fee? How is it OUR problem you didn't understand your overage minutes? The fact your to lazy, incompant, or completely fucked to understand how this service works. To our customers that take the time to read shit? Thank you. You are the people we give credits to. Those little rich-ass-getto-acting-wigger-rats that call up and yell at us? Yea. We don't have to give you ANYTHING, and, honestly, if you're going to be like that; we won't. Go sign up with AMP'ed or something. They'll charge you more, but at least you won't have to bother reading anything to understand your serivce offer.

Dionysus Sep 12 2006

Well, I have had this phone for a little while now, and I have discovered one very important thing. You get what you pay for. For $30 you get what you pay for. There are no games. There is no camera. You cannot download streaming video or watch your favorite TV program. But you know what you can do? You can use it as a telephone. Yup ... you can punch in your fav telephone number and connect (as long as you are in PCS territory) and you can have a real regular phone conversation. And for that it works very well.

Sorry to be so sarcastic, folks. It's just that these days people seem to care more about "extras" than they do about the main function of something. This is a pretty good phone, especially for the price.

Rebecca Sep 14 2006

lol some ppl are nuts.
i like that i dont get charged if i make a call for less than a minute for like the whole day..... the ONLY thing that bugs me about this cell is that when the battery is about to die and im talking to some1 i cant just plug it in and itll recharge and i keep talking. i was told by kyocera that i need another type of charger to do that. so if its about to die i have to not be talking on it and then just recharge it...its sad. but the other recharger that does allow for that has a diff name i dont remember

bETSY Sep 14 2006

I have had this phone for a few weeks now and virgin for over a year, while yes that phone menu when calling customer service is annoying as all get out, i hae been happy with them, especially since they got their new talk plans, as for the phone i havent had battery issues at all seems to hold a charge , while not for 8 day like promised but i dont have to charge everynight, for a cheap phone i like it and have had no issues

jonathon Sep 22 2006

dude i love this phone i baught it my self and it rocks. screw all the other comments you should buy this phone. rock on!!!

john Oct 01 2006

my daughters friend has one and the battery has not been charged for two days ..... she is talking on it right now so go buy a new battery for those who have shit baterries laterzs.....

Dionysus Oct 02 2006

It's cheaper to go buy another phone and then throw the phone away and keep the battery than it is to buy just a new battery. The battery costs more than the phone did ... unless you can find one at a discount somewhere.

Karen Oct 05 2006

I got this phone 3 weeks ago and had the battery problem. I contacted Virgin Mobil several times and have received a new phone (with battery and charger), a new battery and a new charger. Nothing worked. I wish I would have checked it out before I bought it. I am going to return the phone today. Customer service was always pleasant -- even the guy who wanted to sell me an $85 battery for a $30 phone that I had one week.

Dejon Oct 06 2006

ya da di boo boo dis phone is clean

Re: battery problems

Why not just spend the $20 for an extra phone then just use the battery and chager ? Problem solved. You're welcome. Next problem ?

Ieasha Oct 11 2006

I"m contemplating getting an oystr and have made up my mind to get one. It is a nice phone at a reasonable price..I can tell I'm gonna love it!!!!

Jonna Oct 12 2006

I was going to buy the phone but after reading the comments I am having second thoughts!! I have heard alot of very bad comments on the batteries but I am not going to be talking on the phone constantly like all the preppy bitches at my school!!

bug Oct 16 2006

the battery will not hold a charge for even a day

Virgin told us to take it back to the store so we bought another to replace the bad one and it does the same thing :-(

anna Oct 24 2006

Is the phone good or bad?

Dionysus Oct 26 2006

I finally had to do something about the phone. Repeated calls to Virgin did nothing to solve the problem, so I now have a Tracfone that holds a charge in its battery much, much longer than the Oystr. In all fairness, with the exception of the battery deal, the Oystr is a good phone. I just couldn't get over the battery deal.

Joshua Oct 29 2006

I don't talk a lot. I switched from Verizon to VM. The network coverage in Marin County, north of San Francisco is a little less than on Verizon, but not that much less.

The phone is solid, I'm surprised. The reception and quality of audio is fine. VM gave me 7.50$ in credits for minutes, so the phone cost 12.50$. I like their 6.95$ plan w/ minutes at .10. Battery does seem weak, but I don't use the phone much.

Customer service does take a long time in non 9-5 business hours. I now see I could have got a better phone for free online with credit for minutes VM give.

Anyway, I'm very happy with the whole siituation. If you are looking for a low cost cell alternative, by low cost I mean 10 -15$ a month this is the only game in town.
