Samsung t709 announced

Jan 04 2006 - 02:05 PM ET | CES, Samsung, T-Mobile

samsung t709CES 2006 - The Samsung t709 should please T-Mobile users, it's one of several upcoming phones from the carrier that support WiFi. Otherwise the phone is fairly similar to the existing t809, though thicker. T-Mobile runs thousands of WiFi hotspots, so it could competitively price data for when in a T-Mobile Hotspot (e.g. Starbucks).

Features of the Samsung t709 include:

  • Tri-band GSM 850/1800/1900 plus EDGE
  • WiFi
  • 1.3 megapixel camera
  • 262K color screen
  • MP3 player
  • Speakerphone
  • 22mm thick (versus 15mm for the t809)

The Samsung t709 should be shipping from T-Mobile USA starting in the second quarter 2006. As we noted above, T-Mobile should debut a few more WiFi compatible handsets soon.

i agree, until tehy can have real 3g like everyone else wifi is a nice compromize. They should make it free at all those hotspots they own.

So, what can you do with a WiFi phone? I guess you could access the internet, but what about tethering your laptop to the T709. I don't see bluetooth on the list of features, so would one have to use a USB cable? Or, can you access the internet thru the T709 via WiFi? Any info would be greatly appreciated...

It seems to me that as WiFi and (especially) WiMax footprints continue to grow, a phone that can switch between a traditional network and VoIP could dramatically shake up the industry. No?

T-Mobile doesn't put out newer products and technologies until they're relatively mature and actually work. Unlike Verizon's 'wireless TV' phones that sometimes work, and sometimes don't, T-Mobile waits until they have a product their customers can actually use and have value with.

Calypso Wireless has such a phone using ASNAP technology. It seemlessly roams between wifi and GSM.
