CES 2006 - Verizon Wireless announced this morning that it will begin carrying the UTStarcom XV6700. It's the first Windows Mobile 5.0 device for Verizon Wireless, though Sprint Nextel already launched the device late last year.
Features of the XV6700 include:
The XV6700 is available today to enterprise customers through Verizon Wireless' business sales channels. It will be available at retail on January 19 for $299.99 after $100 rebate with 2-year contract.
Can you make your own ringtones with this phone?
I just ordered mine and expect it in a couple of days. Can you tell me if it supports voice dialing? I doesnt' say so in the brochure, but it makes no sense that it wouldn't.
please tell me the pors and cons of this phone im looking at getitng a new phone with allot of fetures and not sure what one to get.
Can you use or get aim on this phone? does anyone know?
I just got one of these phones on the weekend. So far so good. It repaces my PDA and old verizon phone. I too am looking to find ringtones, however it is so new the Verizon ringtone sites don't list the phone.
So new I cannot find a clip for it that can fit the fatter extended battery.
Great Device, I just ordered about 20 of them for a demo for my company. I like this allot better than my old blackberry. I too was looking for ring tones but I guess I am just going to have to convert some music into ring tones.
To answer a few of the questions on this post...
-first I dont think it supports AIM it does have MSN messanger on it but you cant leave it on because it does kill the battery.
-Pros..
To answer a few of the questions on this post...
-first I dont think it supports AIM it does have MSN messanger on it but you cant leave it on because it does kill the battery.
-Pros..
- I love how the phone looks and feels. It has a way better Key board on it compared to its big brother the 6600, and the blackberry for that matter.
- I also like the MSN hotmail and messanger that was added onto this device.
- The smaller as in shorter design of this phone is really nice, its not like the others where it feels like you are talking into a VCR, its still bigger than a cell phone but come on its a mini computer, just get blue tooth and you're fing
-Cons...
- The screen size is a smaller than the previouse versions of it so for those that have a hard time seeing this might not be the best one for you.
- Although hotmail is on the phone it isnt a real time sync, in order to send mail or recieve it you have to press the Send/Revieve button. Not to bad but still an added step.
- It has a better ear piece in it than the 6600 but it is still hard to hear at times, but blue tooth and the ear buds that come with it are great.
- Lastly would be the price, with out a two year contract you are looking at about 500 to 600 dollars, but for the performance that this thing has it is definately worth it..
I hope that this will help some one, again this is just my opinion on things and just my views that I took while testing it for my company.
To answer someones question, I don't think it has voice activation. If you go to verizionwireless web page and compair it to the Trio it says no next to voice comands. Sorry I cried too!
A basic Google search will find an AIM program for the Pocket PC, that may work on the phone.
Not sure if Verizon has it locked out or not, but the manual for the similar Alltel model states that you only need to copy a music file into the RINGS folder, then select it from the Phone Settings menu.
Again on the Alltel phone the RINGS folder was found by using File Explorer, then navaigating to the WINDOWS folder.
I am very curious to see how much different the Verizon phone is, in regards to what has been locked out!
UPDATE:
Just found this on the Verizon page for the phone:
"*The XV6700 supports the Wireless Headset and Handsfree Bluetooth Profiles. It does not support object transfer (OBEX) profiles. Accessories sold separately."
In other words. Verizon has crippled the BlueTooth to prevent file transfers outside of their transfer for a fee system!
The question remains if file transfers via other means such as the memory card, IR, or WiFi, are also disabled. It may be noted here that a Pocket PC Network program is available to allow access to your network, much like your desktop PC can do. Wonder if that will be a work-around?
I am too interested in this phone. Regarding voice dialing, may be MS's Voice Command would do the job? More info on this web site:
http://www.mobiletechreview.com/software/MS_VoiceCommand_PPC.htm
I just got my phone and i am loving it. The phone does not have a voice program in it but you can get microsofts voice program for it. As far as ring tones i am still looking into a program that will work.
I have had this phone for a couple of days now. It is true that MS Voice command can be downloaded to the phone but the results are far from excellent. When the touch screen is on the phone can easily be put into unintended modes that may or may not allow you to receive your phone calls and if you have had another device such as a PDA associated with your outlook profile you may have difficulty getting this phone to sync with your addresses etc. If anyone has any suggestions I'd love to hear them. Thanks, TG
I've had this phone for about a week now and I can't say that everything about it is wonderful, but most of it is. I have been using a BlackBerry 7520 (Nextel) for the last year and have been constantly been disappointed and frustrated with my inability to do certain tasks so I have been keeping my eye out for a replacement. Once I heard that Windows Mobile 5 would enable push email to work with an Exchange 2003 Server (with SP2), that was all I needed to hear.
One of the first things I had to do was to turn off the hard buttons on the side of the phone. I was unintentionally turning the camera on or starting IE. I also found the hack to enable the WiFi without disabling the phone which was something that I found utterly stupid on Verizon's part. I found using bluetooth to sync with my laptop to be a piece of cake on the PDA side (I had a few issues on the PC side, but nothing that I haven't run into with BT before). I too have installed MS's Voice Commander software and from the little that I've used it (I haven't read the manual on it so I don't know everything it can do yet, I just use it to place phone calls), it was worked great. There has been only one name in my contacts that it doesn't recognize so I have to dial that one manually (or as manual as it gets with speed dial and smart dialing).
One of my major dislikes of the BlackBerry was the limited BlueTooth stack (could only connect to a BT headset). I have a BT GPS receiver in my car and had to keep my Dell Axim around just to use my map software with my GPS. I know I could have found some software for my blackberry that would have used the integrated GPS, but those apps just weren't as good as what I already had on my PDA. Also, only my email and calendar would udpate over the air with my blackberry, so my contacts would have to be updated by plugging my blackberry into my computer. This wouldn't seem like too big of a deal except that I can't take my phone into my office with me. I really like having real PDA functionality built into my phone and I'm not really sure how I lasted this long with my BlackBerry.
I have added quite a few apps to my phone and modified a few registry keys to get it to do what I want it to do, how I want to do it. But I don't think there will ever be a device out there that nobody is going to tweak to their liking.
I didn't have Verizon port my number from my BlackBerry over to my new phone because I wasn't sure if I was going to keep it. Now the only question is which wireless provider do I go with since both Verizon and Sprint offer this phone. I'm going to do a little research to find out which provider has better service in my area, then go buy the phone from that provider and get rid of my BlackBerry.
I know I was a little long winded (alright, really long winded), but I wanted to let everyone know what I did and didn't like about the phone any why I was switching to is so you can decide how to take my comments.
Enjoy.
Question:
When surfing the web with my phone, it says that I can't go to several website because I don't have at least Inernet Explorer 5. How do I get that and why did in not come with the phone?
Daniel: Were you able to get the BT GPS to work with the 6700?
Good Day All,
I've had this phone for a week, just ordered a 2gb mini SD card for storage & music. Audiovox tech told me to download Activesync from Microsoft, rather than use the disk - apparently there are some minor problems.
Great phone, really enjoying it and yes, it needs voice command and ringtones. The tech said you can download music from Pc once sync'd and use them as ringtones (also increases volume. I'm working on that today.
Daniel, or anyone for that matter! How do you find the HACK for enabling WI/FI with out having to disable the phone? Anyone know?
Install ringtones?
With the phone docked, allow it to sync. Then open the Windows Mobile Device drive. Go to the windows folder, and there is a folder called rings. Just move any audio file there so that it can be used as a ringtone.
I'm new to the PDA/Phone world...Can you hook this phone up to a laptop so that the laptop can access the web anywhere the phone can?
I am curious how the microsoft voice command works for voice dialing, does it also work with the bluetooth ear piece? Does your GPS receiver work with your vx 6700? Does the mobile web on the phone work with SKYPE ? I am not sure if I want to get this phone yet.
Lance
I just bought it, It does work neat , a lot of menus to learn - no buggy.
NO VOICE DIAL, dont believe what Verizon tech support tells you. It will work with my ear piece and my mapping software and GPS Device.
using both Devices at the same time. ALso it send the navigation commands from the mapping software to the ear piece, Neat !
It will use SKYPE thats ok. STill learning how to get it to sync with my current active sync software for my AXIM X51v. I'll get it no biggy.
Neat Phone tho !
Verizon sales reps said that you could download software for the ppc that allows you to do voice dial. I found one called VITO, but it doesn't work on the ppc like it says it does. Has anyone found voice dial software that does work on ppc?
I've had the XV-6700 (Verizon) for about a week now.
Download the update to ActiveSync 4.x: The 3.7 that used to work just WON'T!!! After going to v4.x: Things started to work, and I was a happy camper, for sure.
Regarding Ringtones: to get something as a ringtone, go to the following (which was correct for me): After doing the Standard Sync, went to: My Windows Mobile Based Device >> Windows >> Rings - then, do another sync.
Regarding voice dialing: I downloaded Microsoft Voice Command 1.50, as a Trial version (I believe this was from the Handango website). Some people had complained about the software being really picky about what one says to get it to dial or look for things on your phone: it's a computer software package. It needs very exacting instructions. This goes and looks through either my address book (which now syncs REALLY GOOD with my Outlook 2003) and looks for either my contacts or my appointments. This saves me a great deal of time. I outgrew my other Handheld iPaq (HP) and my Samsung phone (Verizon Wireless).
To be able to see things better, go to the Handango website, and get the HandyMenu software: cheap and very helpful!!!
Something that I got that has been good for me: I paid $2X.xx for the Stocks And Weather software. I can have the weather sync'd for various cities: mine, the folks, the in-laws, the major clients, etc. Make sure and install the thems on the mini-SD card (see next paragraph)
I got the 1GB mini-SD card: if I find Map software that I like, might replace it with a 2GB card instead. For right now, it works for me. Make sure and back-up what's on the phone. Remember, it's a small pc!
Also, don't be cheap! Get the insurance. For a phone that hooks-up to USB the way it does, and allows one to use other devices, other than just the cradle, I don't expect the price of the phone to drop until there are more phones coming out for Verizon that have the USB capabilities. So, I'm going to carry the insurance for the next 6-12 months, until the price comes down and it's more cost-effective to replace it than to pay for the insurance. As one of the pricier phones, not willing to drop the insurance just yet.
For business people, the HP 12C software works great on the XV-6700!!! I don't have to carry around my 12C any more, as it's in my XV-6700.
The Pocket PC Quicken - after I downloaded and installed the update for Windows Mobile 5.0, now works great. The ability to enter checks right from my XV-6700 is great. Further, I always have my cell phone with me at the ATM, so that I can record withdrawals immediately. NICE.
Also, Audible Player works great on the XV-6700 too. Just make sure that the books, news, or whatever is installed on the mini SD card.
One word of caution: watch out for disc (memory) space. Make sure Apps are on the XV-6700, and WHATEVER can be put on the mini-SD card, is on the mini-SD card!
Get the screen covers! Do you want to wear out the screen on such a nice device? I don't.
Without using bluetooth yet, I'm getting fantastic batterey life. If I start using bluetooth, will order the extended life batterey online. Heard rumors it really drains batterey down faster.
Cautions, other than memory:
(1) Watch out how you hold the phone, easy to mistakenly cover up the microphone area - yep, I've done that a few times. User Error.
(2) If account held jointly with spouse, etc., make sure and try to get your phone number as primary. Reason: the only way to really get a Data Plan that won't cost you a gazillion dollars! Either make sure you sync, or get the approximately $25 or $50 data plans. I'm trying to just work with the sync thing. If you want to use the wireless or whatever, get the data plan. For what you get charged for using the data without the data plan, just pay for the data plan - unless you're just gonna sync...otherwise, the bill will "sink" you!
(3) It's difficult to get accessories. So, try to get any screen covers that you can initially fit onto the screen, until the online order comes in! I pre-cut on to size from my iPaq screen covers, then placed it on my screen, while waiting for my order for the screen cover for the XV-6700.
(4) Also, watch out for the eelskin covers, I've heard rumors about eelskin wallets possibly zapping credit cards. If they can possibly zap credit cards, what about one's memory? Not sure if this is valid, or not: I don't want to find out or be the one to test this!!!
(5) Clarify about data transmission with Verizon. The way the salesperson described it to me, any data transmission, including bluetooth, means you can get a data use charge, that sounds kind of steep. Get it in writing, or get technical clarification. Whenever I get my other bluetooth devices, I too will double-check. Would rather pay $25 or $50 a month, than get stuck with the rates (too much) for a-la-cart data access pricing!
I so far have tried voice2go free trial software, unsure if it was on handango or microsoft downloads. works great, can add about 10 commands for the free trial.
waiting for a gps hardware (bluetooth enabled reciever) and software (probably microsoft 2006 map pack might work)
tried a couple of games until i ran out of memory space. got a 1g miniSD today for $84. can't wait reorganize all files. goodluck to all!!
i just bought my phone today and i am not fully aware of what it is capable of. is there a website that can explain things like ActiveSync 4.x, ppc, and obex transfers?
I paid for and downloaded music from the MSN music site in Windows Media Player 10 on my PC, but it does not find or recognize the XV6700 when I try to sync. Is this a problem with the machine or am I just doing something wrong?
I have the trial version of the voice command on my phone, but can you use the voice command through your bluetooth headset? I can't figure out how to activate my my voice command with my plantronics 320 headset.
Voice command does not support bluetooth headsets but if you couple it with another program that does via a simple registry hack then you are good to go. look around and you will find the hack, there have been hundreds of postings on it. Hopefully microsoft will add this feature to their program soon.
Will I be able to surf the internet on the xv6700 using the wifi on my home network?
Anyone able to get Bluetooth, ActiveSync, Wireless Sync working on the XV6700? Specifically, to enable use of the phone as a modem? Any help greatly appreciated.
Oh, yeah....also using MS Exchange Server for Outlook....
Tom
Could not get the phone to ActiveSync with Outlook 2003 running through a VPN to a corporate network. Upon connection, VPN went down every time. Microsoft tech support indicated it is a problem they are working on. I am using the latest ActiveSync 4.1, Build 4841 from the Microsoft web site. You can still sync offline which is what I am doing now.
Does anyone know how to answer the phone using bluetooth? I turned BT on! If I get a call should I just not be able to hit the button on my headset (motorola) to answer? I have voice command too (very cool product) and I know it does not work with bluetooth. Does anyone know where the hack is to get that to go?? What other bluetooth enabled program can I get on the phone?
Thanks, MMS
I have just gotten my XV6700 about 10 days ago. I love it. But I am totally frustrated right now. I am trying to sync with Windows Media and it won't dectect the device. I am syncing with Active Sync - Outlook, etc. without a problem. Anyone know what I can do?
To activate phone and wif at same time
Here is where I got the Multiissue file above.
http://www.pdaphonehome.com/forums/showthread.php?t=64889
It was working great for me before but now its not doing anything for me.
Oh well in a few days I will do a hard reset and try again. :)

Ah hem ... Scott old buddy-
In that same thread, it is documented that the hack doesn't work for wifi and phone simultaneously and why it doesn't. A typo in the code. Coincidentally, they found the exact same error I did in the registry file and fixed it.
See:

"Hey Zam nice find! Just wanted to give you a little heads up - you have a typo in your setup.xml file
it should be 'MutexFlag'
Besides that nice work!!! Got anymore interesting codes?
For everyone else -
Wifi and Phone @ same time
Go to key: HKLM/Services/WirelessMgr
Find a key called 'MutexFlag'
Change it's value from '1' to '0' "
Bottom line- all you need to do is the simple 1 to 0 change and you can enable both. Don't need the Multiissue cab unless you want the BT DUN fix.
bt dun fix has no need to download software or anything. on verizons version go to the phone option then dial this code ##3328863 and push talk it will ask for a security code type in zero six times. you will want to tap edit then you see two options...just enable both and you will be good to go. remember verizon charges you even when you are connected via bluetooth so be careful. as for the rest just do a lot of google searching and hit up phonescoop.com for other help

I just got my xv6700 today. Can anyone tell me what the best voice command download for this phone is?
just purchased over the weekend, was curious if anyone has downloaded the software to make the vx6700 compatable with Lotus Notes?
XV6700 question....
how do you open a PDF file?
what are you using to edit the registry to make some of the edits mentioned here? Thanks,
Jon
Battery Life - I work for vzw and I was talkin to one of our wdts tech's apparently the 6700 tries to active sync every 10 mins or so whether you are connected to the usb or not. This drains your batt and slows down your pda. Here's the way to fix the issue:
-Go to Programs
-Open active sync
-Configure server (you have to create a bs server in order to go into options and change the auto sync issue)
-Create fake server address, user name, password, and domain. Then save anything you enter will work.
-go back into active sync main screen
-menu
-options
-Schedule
-from here you can change the sync to manual
You'll see better batt life and speed up operation by having one less app always open.
My company's email is lotus notes based. This is available directly by using lotus notes or by going to secure web site from any computer, w/o notes loaded.
I bought the 6700, and it is great, however, I cannot pickup web based notes email. I get an error msg after I sign in that reads:
Error 404
HTTP web server;Lotus Notes Exception
File does not exist
Any body have any idea as to how I can get my email
Sam you want to call WDTS (wireless Data tech support at 1800 922 0204 and ask abt feat known as Always on Always connected.
Check to see if it supports Lotus notes. If they are not sure call Audiovox Directly to see when they say.
Does any one know how to access the GPS on the VX6700 verizon phone
I just got my 6700. Everything is great just had a few questions. first i was wondering how to set songs as my ringtones because the ringers are way to low i can't hear them. next i was wondering if anyone esle feels like the phone has a bad echo. if there is any other things i can do to make my experience better please let me know. thanks
To get music as ringtone you have to put a mucic file into the ringer file.
I have read that but i am having trouble finding the ringer file on my phone and on the active sync.
Mike, The folder is in the MyDevice/Windows/Rings directory.
On another note: Tried to activate the DUN usng the instructions provided here and I get a 'call cannot be completed as dialed'
Has anyone had any luck using the VX6700 as a modem with a bluetooth-equipped laptop. I've set up my connections as usual, created a partership between the laptop and phone, but get a "no dialtone" message.

1. Anyone figure out how to sync with Lotus notes?
2. Can you avoid the "every 10 minute sync" issue by turning off the program in memory? Do you have to create the fake entry?
3. Is there a hack so I can use my BT headset with MS Voice Command?
TIA, John
HELP WITH BLUETOOTH AND VOICE COMMAND!!!!

For those looking for the BT Voice command info...
MS Voice Command activation from BT headset
Now this one is sweet and makes the JASJAR the daddy for voice commands.
Install Voice Command to the default location.
Fire up a registry editor
Go to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\OEM\VoiceCommand
Modify the string marked "path" from the default \Windows\SDDialer.exe to \Program Files\Voice Command\VoiceCMD.exe
Now, when you press your BT headset connect button, MS Voice command will fire up and take commands through the headset. It's reponses will be played through the headset too.
Also for Joshua,
Go up one more directory in your file explorer on your PC while active sync connected.
Also for those of you looking to make the 6700 a better device...
Look for a freeware today screen plugin called "SearchToday.cab" It puts a google search bar on your today screen.
You can also playback m4a and mpeg4 content on the 6700. This makes loading trailers of your favorite movies fun. The WMP ver 10 will play back m4a (mpeg4 audio) files. But you will need TCPMP (ALSO FREE) to playback mp4 videos. The widescreen payback at full screen and landscape is awesome. Who needs an ipod video (oh wait only 2gb mini sd cards available) ok ipd wins there :-)
For those getting this phone the 2 MOST crucial things to learn is the ON/OFF button at the top of the device also allows you to holster the device without CALLING your last number.
And the Verizon Wirless Holster is HORRIBLE STAY AWAY. The VZW store in Circuit City has a great leather case with flap for protection but it does not have a swivel hook (not really needed as i have found out)
you can check those pocket pc guides
I tried everything to get my device to sync with ActiveSync, even talking with tech support who referred me to Audiovox tech support. No one could help me. It seemed to be a firewall issue that could not be resolved. I was about to give up, then I tried a program called Intellisync and it worked the first time!! Does anyone know anything about this program?
I have a ppc6700 from Alltel and I loaded MS Voice Command 1.5 and I do not have the registry key mentioned previously. Is there a way to get my bluetooth to start the Voice Command?
Beware! I bought a 2gb mini sd card for this phone, and loaded it up. Notice that there is no cover flap for the storage card, and the case that comes with the xv6700 does not cover the top of the unit; I had it in my purse and at some point, the card must have popped out -- and it's gone gone gone. Along with data that I never should have loaded onto a mobile device without password protection.
Word to the wise.. be careful with your storage cards. Bad design to locate the slot at the top without any protection.
I am able to access several Wi-Fi networks from work and home. Can the XV6700 use these networks without purchasing a data plan from Verison?
Does anybody else have problems with incoming calls? Sometimes I get them, other times I don't. The phone doesn't ring on my end, but it does for the caller. So I end up with voice mails, but my phone never rang. I thought it was a hardware problem, so I took it in to get another one and I still have the same problem. The reception (according to the icon) is great. One thing I need out of my cell phone is the ability to receive phone calls!!!
Matt,
I've been having the same problem, and after being on a support call for over an hour, with 5 different reps, it seems to come down to this -- phone calls and data transmission use the same line, and data transmission takes precedence over incoming phone calls...basically, any time your device is transmitting or receiving data (wireless sync, loading web pages, etc.), anyone calling you will go directly to voicemail. Apparently, this is by design (!), and a "feature" of the cellular transmission methods of all the major carriers...if anyone out there has found a way around that, or can correct me, I'd be VERY grateful, as this is a very frustrating "feature"!
Hey guys,
I ordered the VX6700 and the motorola 500 bluetooth headset. Thanks to the posts I learned about some hacks that I should do to better the phone. A lot of you talk about the link http://www.cmz727.com/alan/6700/6700.htm .
The question that I have is how to actually get the hacks on the phone and get them to work.
Specifically: 1) Wifi and calls at the same time
2)Voice commands via the head set.
Also what does it mean to get the bluetooth DUN and enable the GPS.
These maybe simple question for you guys, but I really want to know what to do when the phone arrives tomorrow. Thank you.
I have had this phone for over a month. I love it! Here are some answers to peoples questions:
You can buy a MiniSD and place WAV, MP3, or MIDI files on your memory card and they can be selected as ringers. You don't have to use the phones memory.
Voice command sucks for me as I have a deep voice, but it worked great when my wife tried it.
Hacking; I have successfully hacked the GPS in the Settings menu, speeding up the phone, and disabling no phone while using WI-FI. I DO NOT RECOMEND DOING THIS UNLESS YOU BACK UP YOUR REGEDIT OR YOU KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING! (I had no problems).
GPS; Still trying to figure it out. I know you can buy a receiver for Pocket PC's, but some have GPS built in (like some Blackberrys). I beleive almost all cel phones have GPS for 911 location, but I amm not sure if it uses satellite or cel phone towers to locate you. If anyone has any info on GPS for VX6700, please let us know.
I love this phone but I am a novice to the whole pocket pc idea. I want to unlock all my phone's capabilities... So to say the least I NEED HELP. I've looked at many registry hacks but don't know how to do it. Anyone willing to give up a little extra time and help me out :O ...please!

In fact, looking further, the registry entry was supposed to originally refer to (SDDialer.exe) does not exist in my Windows directory. It seems odd that they'd supply a voice recorder but not provide voice activated dialing features.
Thanks in advance if any one has any answers.

Hope that helps...
As a new user I appreciate the help found here. My question is concerning WiFi and Phone at same time. Is the objective of this so that one can use a service such as Skype after accessing the internet via WiFi? Incidentally, I have tried to install the Skype on my SV6700 without success. Is that because I have not yet made the fix to enable phone and WiFi at the same time? Thanks for any help. Ed
Tried the BT DUN fix by dialing ##3328863 but got the "your call cannot be completed as dialed" msg. Anyone have any luck with it lately?
Really like the XV-6700 I've had for a week now, thanks to all who've posted tips here, you've saved me a lot of time and trouble.
I attempted to install MS Voice Command 1.5 today w/out success (like some others on this forum, "voice command" is not in registry). Called MS Tech support, the rep said 1.5 isn't compatible with Windows Mobile 5. He said version 1.6 should be available for download sometime this month and will be compatible.
I love this thing.. so far :) tho its only been about 3 days... but I love it
Call quality is good, not like my Moto 815, but better than other phones I've had..
There's a slight learning curve that has to be mastered but nothing too terrible if you're somewhat competent with computers and MS products.
I did the registry edit (thank you!), got the wifi and phone to work at the same time along with the BT... drains the battery like crazy but so far so good. Still having probs getting the wifi to work with my security enabled wireless network but I'll figure it out, it's probably an error on my side, not the phone's.
Installed TCMP and now it plays everything I have, divx, mp3, etc. Put a Simpsons episode on there last night.. perfect! Windows Media Player is decent too.
Got the ringtones to work, all I had to do was put my mp3 ringtone into my ringer directory and then run active sync...
Ya its a bit ugly and brickish but it's powerful as hell.
Gotta rebuild my exchange server this weekend, and I'll add the push functionality at that point. I'll give you guys a follow up on how well it works after I do it. that's the main reason I upgraded from my 815 and got this instead of another flip phone.. so I have high expectations for it.
Bottom line, I was waiting and waiting and waiting for the Moto Q to come out, I came to this site and others and read the reviews and posts and decided to try my luck with the XV 6700.. glad I did. This has way more features than the Q and will probably be less expensive than the Q. The slide out KB is a great, great idea and makes the 6700 more compact, albeit more bulky than the Q will be.
Touchscreen, wifi, slide out KB, all features the marvelous Q won't have... ya the Q will be prettier and more aesthetically pleasing, and that's great. But for me, give me the one that works better and the one that I can do more things with. That's the one I'll choose. I'm glad I got this phone/pda.
Here's my take on this phone. I would like to write my experiences with this phone. I was excited to hear that FINALLY Verizon is introducing some cutting edge phones after being with Verizon for a long time. The phone works great ONLY if your company has exchange setup. Otherwise, the baseic e-mail functionality has a flaw ie., the sent mails are not stored in the "Sent Items" I spent 8 hrs all together with Verizon Tier III tech and an hours time with Microsoft to have the probem.
The verizon techs were puzzled to hear that the phone can't store the sent mails. After doing an hour of test, they asked me to get a new phone. I got that and still have the same problem and called them and now they conclude that it's outlook and they don't support outlook. They asked me to call MS for support, I am still not sure why would I need to call MS for support. I am a end consumer who bought a phone from Verizon. That's exactly what MicroSoft said to be and said they can help me if I pay them (makes sense)..
Why does Verizon want to put a phone on the market if the phone doesn’t have the basic e-mail function? Who are they trying to convince? I have decided to return this PIECE OF SCRAP. I should have trusted PC Mag review.
For those who are thinking of using this phone for IMAP or POP, PLEASE DO NOT GET THIS PHONE. Verizon techs have no IDEA on how to support this phone.
Feel free to contact me at nnalin@hotmail.com. If someone from Verizon techinical department reads this and want more information, I would be very happy to talk to them.
I know this may be a novice question, but since I am a novice, I guess it is ok.
How do I upload/transfer music files to this phone?
Gray
You will need to use the explore option on the Active sync and just copy your MP3. Any conversion that needs to be done will be done when copying the files.
I just purchaed one of these units tonight so my wife can do her online school work while away. A few issues I'm hopeing someone will know the answer to.. 1. tried to download Adobe Mobile so she can open PDF files and unit will not open the file. 2. when accessing her schools website it said it needs internet explorer 5.0 and this unit has I beleive is 3.0. I was unable to locate anything newer for this mobile device. hope someone can help me out.otherwise this thing is going back,, please e-mail me at matt1751@netzero.net thanks
can anyone help with the cab file for the vz Wireless Sync Software. I have the Sprint version of the 6700
I too can't find the ringers folder. I read everything on here but I guess I'm not following. Can anybody help?
Does any one know how to keep the phone from remembering the last number dialed or called in? Every so often, I must bump the power button and then lean over on the joy stick and call the last number. I want to ditch this feature all together. Thanks in advance.
I attempted a risky move by adding the "Voice Command" key and then procceded to fill it with the appropriate strings listed... DO NOT ATTEMPT.. After much struggle I was able to get my PPC back to reg running conditions after it decided to swandive into insanity ( quick buttons worked different then I set them, entire wireless would go on an off by itself, ETC.) So hopefully someone else has a better idea. Just fig I would let you know before someone gave it a try :)
Above I am refering to the Regedit trick to enable bluetooth Voice Command. :D
\\my device\windows\rings
I beleive this is the folder your looking for for ringers... I dont have a way of testing my theory at the moment but hopefully this helps.
Where is the regedit on the xv6700 or do you do the regedit on the computer and then the activeSync puts it on the xv6700.Or is there someone local to Las Vegas that can make the hacks for WiFi and phone use at the same time //MS voice Command and bluetooth for Voice Dialing and activation. Last put not least the phone will play wav files for ring tones, but not mp3, how do I play mp3 as ring tones. Please someone let me know. If you want to email me direct greg1ria@yahoo.com or call (702) 400-0054, Thanks Ahead of time.
im pretty good with computers but cant get the /windows/rings folder to show up on my pc when i sinc the phone, its just not there. can anyone please give a detailed explanation on what i need to do?
The reason was the number for fixing the bluetooth DUN service is not working for some if that there is a typo in the number!
Here are the correct instructions:
1. Go to the PHONE application
2. ##3328873
3. enter code 000000
4. Select BT DUN
5. Click Edit
6. Choose enable
7. Select WMODEM
8. Click Edit
9. Choose enable
10. Push Save / OK
11. Push Ok
12. follow the prompt to restart your device
discover services, and voila! you've got bluetooth DUN available.
I found it here:
http://www.pdaphonehome.com/forums/showthread.php?t=64889
And the buy has a file you can download with more hacks.
Now ... I lost my XV6700 Verizon manual and I'm a newbie on this phone.
Can someone tell me where I can find one online. I have searched and searched ...
Typos myself (!):
The reason WHY the number ...
And the GUY has a file you can download ...
can sum 1 help me i jus got the xv6700 n i seen a lot of kool hacks but i cant fined the registry editor. does ne 1 know were i could download it pleez. thanx
I moved 10 wav files to the phone using ActiveSync. 5 of them play (as ringtones), the other 5 don't. I tried deleting and moving again, but no luck.
They all play on my PC... just seems odd. They vary in size so that is not an issue. I would think all wav files are alike?
hey guys i just purchased this device earlier today anf i too am new to the world of pda's could someone please walk me through on how to get my music off of my computer on to my phone for ringtones...also i am not really a big web surfer so one of the main reasons i got this was to watch movies and shows off of my 1gb card while i am sitting in my college classes, is that possible??? could someone please help...also what is the best type of card to go with
help!!! i installed a couple softwares on my zv6700, I now realized that the spk on the phone is not working any more .I can hear the ring in incoming call neither music in media player But the handfree set is okay I can hear music and make phone calls. It's happen right after I installed the apple skin from Upod and that was a tryout. please if anybody know something tell me what to do to resolve this.
Okay...Ive read up and down this forum more than once. I keep reading everybody's explanation to how to transfer music files to the "ringers" folder. Well, Ive looked OVER and OVER and Im convinced that there is NO "ringers" folder on here. I've even yet to see a "windows" folder that I keep hearing about. Somebody...anybody lol...give me the step by step to figuring this out PLEASE! Thanx
*QUESTION* When I recieve a Picture Message (MMS) Where does the picture go after I download it?
Regarding finding the "Rings" folder on your 6700:
* Connect and Sych
* Click on the Explore icon on the top of
the ActiveSync window
* The list here might be confusing - double click the first item: "My Windows Mobile-Based Device"
* The next level will have a "Windows" folder
* The next level will have a "Rings" folder
* Copy your ringtones into this folder and they will appear in the PPC folder for ringtones when you look in "settings."
I recommend editing your ringtones with WavePad PRIOR to loading them on your phone. This saves memory, and allows you to only load the higher db portions of mp3 files so you can actually hear them. WavePad has an effects feature that allows you to amplify songs for any playback system so can crank them and blow your speakers if you so choose!
For those who don't have the tag for the Voice Command hack: that hack *only* works for phones which already have a voice dialer in the base package -- it tells the phone to use voice command instead of the native app. The phone as shipped by Verizon does *not* have such an app. Download the upgraded ROM from the UTStarcom site (make sure to get the Verizon version!) and you will have a dinky voice-dialer app which you can replace with MSVC. Recognition over the headset is notably poorer, but it can be done.
Also -- potentially quicker than hacking to enable WiFi: unbrand the phone. ONLY if you hae no data in the phone's memory you can't lose! Do a hard reset. After all the WM setup stuff (train the stylus, etc.) it pops up a message saying that OEM customizations will be applied in 3 seconds. Do a SOFT reset within those 3 seconds and you'll reboot to an unbranded phone. Of course, you'll need to *228 again and configure EvDO by hand if you need it, but those are quick. Enables WiFi and BT ObEx.
Hornet, great advice. thanks! Here's the link to see the manual:
http://www.utstar.com/handsets/view_phone_details.aspx?mcode=XV6700&bID=39&sAct=0
Audiovox sold off it's cellular comunications to UTStarcom and they have a new site to support this phone.
Also, found the ringers folder - thanks, Jet.
Of course, i like that you can record your own ringtones. I have my four year old saying "Daddy, the phone's ringing!" It really freaks people out when that goes off in a store or at the office. This you can do easily through the voice recorder instead of the rings folder.
My biggest problem with this phone for the first week i had it was calling people by accident. Be sure to "lock" your buttons except for power button, and turn off the power button before holstering the phone.

Hey i have the phone but the plastic back fell off and i need a new one anyone know where i can find one??
Great posting guys love what I have seen so far. I am going to get an XV 6700. Does anyone know if the newer devices support stereo bluetooth or do I need to update it myself? If so, where can I get the files and process to upgrading it?
Thanks
Can anyone tell how to use mini sd with the phone. Can you access it directly from the phone
I just bought this phone and I was trying to activate the Wi-fi access. I went through the steps and connected it to my home wireless network and the status of the wi-fi says "connected to network" and it has good signal, but when I try to access IE or use pocket MSN then it says it can't connect to it. Has anyone else had this problem?
Ok a couple of answers:
For mini sd card: from the phone go to Programs then to File Explorer the click the pda icon at the top. You will be able to explorer the entire pda and should see storage card from there.
For the ringtone folder: you can only see the folder through active sync explorer if you have set up a partnership with a computer and not just a basic connect. Once your partnership sync'd with your computer click on explorer on the activesync box, then the pda icon named; my windows Mobile-Based device, then click on the windows folder. You should then see the rings folder now. place your rings tones into this folder and then set them as set your rings from the phones rings set up.
Stereo through bluetooth: You can use stereo through bluetooth with a third party file form the US starcom update web site for the this phone.
The new update for this phone is great with no need to do alot of registry hacks. voice command works great for me.
Another thing i found that works great for me was enabling the bluetooth Dun found above in this set of discussions. i now can sync through bluetooth. i also have found a program call PDAnet at http://www.junefabrics.com/index.php that allows me to use my 6700 as a modem to surf the net anywhere i have a antenna/data signal connection on my phone. Dont know if there is a free program that does what this program does, it has a free trial to test it out then if you want it cost 3x.xx. if anyone knows any free ones let us know.
If you use the web and data connections of this phone, make sure you are on a data plan cause you will need it if you are internet browsing cost wise).
This is the best phone i have ever had and i have had alot of them.
I have owned the verizon xv6700 for a month now. when it works it works great. With the most recent updates from utstarcom the voice activation works well with the bluetooth headset.
The downside is to dial contact you have to enter a voice command (name+home, mobile etc.) instead of the voice recognition that my old motorola e815 had on it. Also the sound level on the handset (when not using a bluetooth headset is so low on the handset that you can only use it in the quietest place and the oem battery does not last as long as stated so I purchased an extended battery. Also the kinks are still being worked out on the software quality so that I have spent 7-10 hours with reps from verizon and utstarcom in the past month and had my phone and battery replace once already due to faulty software. On the positive, love the keyboard and definately worth the money if you can deal with the initial frustrations.
I REALLY WOULD LIKE SOMEONE TO EMAIL ME WITH THESE SIPLE QUESTIONS
1. ON VOICE RECORD CAN U CONVERT INTO RINGTONES?
A. IF SO HOW?
2.WHICH PHONE IS BETTER/PREFERABLE?
THE SIDEKICK III (3)
OR THE XV6700?
3.IS THE INTERNET GOOD? WHEN U GO TO WEBSITES?
4.DOES IT SUPPORT YAHOO MESSENGER?
So I will be purchasing the XV6700 once my current plan expires and I have a few concerns. I will not be using the data package, however, I want to access the internet through the WiFi function. Is there a way to surf the web via WiFi without having data charges??? Any help would be appreciated...
I answered my own question - no data charges for WiFi usage. I was misinformed previously.
New question though. I want the fastest/best 2GB MiniSD card I can find - Any suggestions????
Josh: The best price I found for a 2GB SD Mini was at www.batteries4less.com
It was $65.00....and I paid $2.00 for `express handeling` , which you can probably avoid since I got it by USPS in two days.
FYI...the standar battery is about 1300mAh, that comes with the initial purchase. I bought an 1800m~h battery for $65.00. Then I found a 2000mAh for 10 or 2p bucks more, which I would have been patient enough to see. But it's just fine since UTStarcom was smart enough to allow for stand-alone battery AND phone charge simultaneously....nice to have a spare battery on stand by.
I noticed that you still have about 1 1/2 hrs. after the 20% warning.
hope this helps everyone. Phone is great with some minor quirks.

MUSIC TO PLAY ON MY BLUETOOTH HEADSET?????
So I just purchased this phone and have just finished the update. I also bought a Jabra BT500 bluetooth headset and I'm trying to get the music to play over it but eachtime I click the answer button on the headset the music plays for a second on the headset and than reverts back to phone. This is after the headset attempts to start voice dialing. Any tips??????
SLOW SLOW SLOW
I have 3000 contacts, but this thing is slow. Takes up to 15 secs to find a name, and you think it has crashed.
Also: the battery door comes off at any time
keyboard is great, wifi is good. no voice recognition is unacceptable. bluetooth set is so faint cant hear it in the car while driving with windows closed. must press off button every time it is used or you end up calling people 20 times aday by accident
pain in the but
I just added a 2gig storage card. how do you use the mp3's on the card as my ring tones? there is not enough room on the phone's memory to do this (i have a couple mp3's as rings already). can i make the phone look on the card for the ring tones?
okay.... im po'd... i want aim on this shitty thing... PLEASE EMAIL ME ASAP if you know how to get the right aim thing on this...
i was looking on aim.com and some ppl said aim dont work right with 5.0
Email: - RET_Command@hotmail.com
i need AIM and thats one of the main reasons i bought this phone...
so any help would be gladly accepted
I just got a xv6700 called verizon and activated it. Everything works fine on the phone except for that imcoming calls do not ring through. I even shut off WiFi and BT and am still haveing a problem. Downloaded all the Updates and Spent over 3hrs on the phone with a verizon tech. Any Ideas?
Some of the issues listed above can be resolved...try and have some patience (easy to say when my XV is working fine).
Ring tones: go to file explorer, my device, windows, ring tones...open this and you will see the ring tones that came with the XV; now after you've uploaded your music and/or recorded sound (as per a recommendation above, I recorded my sons saying 'dad...answer the phone!')...save or copy/paste the file to your SD mini, or a file of your choice in a device file. Once it's saved, open it up and hold your styles over the file...'copy' the file...then go to file explorer,my device, windows, ring tones...place and hold your stylus under the last ring tone and 'paste' the file.
Now you should be able to open settings, phone...and should be able to see the file when you scroll through the ring tones. I wouldn't suggest using an entire song since it will bog down your XV. Somewhere above is a link to a site that has a program to compress/cut song files, I would suggest using that.
No ringer coming in after uploading updates: if you've ensured you have a ringer assigned to your incoming calls...and called Verizon (I'm assuming you've done that), I would call Microsoft. I belive the entire opporating systems was developed by them. Verizon is pretty good with support, but I do believe there is a cutoff...and they don't seem to eager to farm you off to Microsoft.
Phone dials and buttons get hit if don't power off: The solution I found works excellent is the aluminum hard case for $29 at www.cases.com Type in XV6700 and all the compatible cases come up. The aluminum case I got has a foam inner liner and swing open door. Stops the 'hey man...you just called me like 5 times in a row' problem. Also has a detachable swivel clip for side-hip belt attachment. The case covers all the buttons on the front, and the power button has an access hole...so you can still power on-off, but it doesn't allow accidental hits. The entire unit with the case is a slight bit heavy...but worth it to protect your unit. The case has a clear plastic window on the door to protect your screen...I used a screen protector on it-and the XV screen.
Has anyone tried the software to enable TV, radio, etc on the web? There is a web site that offers a program for $15.oo that supposedly allows you access to hundreds of TV channels. Sounds good...but I'm sceptical.
Lastley...it would be nice if someone could list all the current/former hacks on this forum...their all kinda scattered. Or be able to access it from a separate URL. Would make it easier than reading twenty pages.
Hope the above helps.
Tim
Is anyone having difficulty with their xv6700 syncing with outlook and gmail. Mine works fine for a couple of days then stops???
Yes. I have to stop and restart the Wireless Sync Client on my PC to get things flowing again.
>>Is anyone having difficulty with their xv6700 syncing with outlook and gmail. Mine works fine for a couple of days then stops???
yhea when i go to my windows mobile base there is no windows folder
can anyone help
I've had my 6700 for about two weeks now and it's been working great. I think the hack to have wifi and the phone on a the same time is covered by software upgrade you can get from http://www.utstar.com/pcd/Downloads.aspx
I have not tried this as yet so I can't say if it work or not. This update should alos allow voice dialing but again after reading through the posts here the voice dialing feature my be limited use.
And the upgrade is to allow you to "lock" the screen so you don't click on something that you don't want to. This might stop the phone from dialing when you put it in your case issue.
If anyone has experiance with this software upgrade it would be nice to know if it's a good one.
Great web site BTW. Found some good information.
Kris
I have read many threads on this site and some people say there is always a charge regardless how I get my data, either with a data plan or even if i use wifi. Others say no charge for wifi. Whos right? I am on verizon network and plan to buy the 6700. Thanks.
I'm having the same problem with not finding the ringtone folder. It's literally not there. There is no "Windows" folder in the My Windows Mobile device. HELP! What happened to it? I have searched everywhere on the phone and no ringtones folder anywhere. Can I just create one? My question is if I can't see the folder, how do I have the default ringtones on my phone? Can someone please help? Thanks!
I'm posting the answer to my own question, but I thought it might help. The folder was hidden. So if you can't find it like me, go into the My Windows Device Folder and click on Tools>Folder Options>"Show Hidden Folders"
Hope this helps someone else!!
Open your mp3 folder in your MiniSD, click and hold the mp3 song then "set as ringtone".. this will copy the file into the phone folder "MY DEVICE/WINDOWS/RINGS".. Make sure you have no more than 3 songs in the RINGS folder, for it will take up your phone memory storage.. just hold and click on the file to delete..
Wifi is free. No charge as long as you TURN ON the third button (WIFI button) under the program WIRELESS MANAGER. As long as you have that fuction ON, and the phone finds the wifi signal(and the proper name), you're free.
The hard buttons. Go to "SETTINGS" and "BUTTONS".. There's an option under LOCK tab to have "Lock all buttons except Power button (located on top of the phone)" Just make sure you press the POWER BUTTON after any phone call because it will stay ON.
I still have to find a way to "keep wifi on while on phonecall" option.. if anyone has successfuly done that recently (post June).. let me know via AIM: kyungjunhan or email: kyungjunhan@hotmail.com
I have also successfuly gone online through my USB cable with my laptop outside the Wifi network. If anyone wants help with that, don't hesitate to get at me. It will not cost you any additional programs like PDAnet or anything to buy! Already comes with the phone. :] I have the unlimited data plan with the $39.99 (450 daytime) plan.. called "CORE PLAN ($79.99 saves you $5/monthly)" offerred by Verizon.. ask for it by name, or the two plans will cost you $85 ($40 voice/$45 unlimited data).
As for AIM/GOOGLE/ICQ/XMPP/MSN/YAHOO messenger, go to http://www.agilemobile.com/downloads.html and download the "Agile Messenger 3 ALPHA for Windows Mobile 5.0 Smartphone and Smartphone 2003" - It works for me well for AIM/AOL/MSN/YAHOO.. haven't tried the GOOGLE/ICQ/XMPP
Guys, just wanted to let you know that though WiFi is free, your service may be subject to monitoring at any time for usage. No worries on what you are accessing - because they do not monitor that, just the amount of use. Once you exceed 5GB, Verizon Wireless does and will have the ability to shut you down!! Just be careful of what you are using it for.
Ooops...wanted to also mention - it WILL NOT matter if you are tethering your device or if you have the "unlimited" data plan - same rules apply, 5 GB or more - you may get a warning or just shut off. They do this to control bandwidth. HTH
Windows media player 10 doesn't see mt xv6700... how do I fix this?
FYI - from this posting trail - there is a WAY easier way to get ANY MP3 to be your ringtone - save it to "My music" and when you select that from your file explorer - with the stylus - press and hold - the menu pops up - select SET AS RINGTONE - and it automatically copies that file to the ringtone and makes it you Incoming call ringtown - I too have struggled with the low volumne on the incoming ringer on this phone
I found THE SITE to check for ringtones
www.pocketgear.com - and click on Ringtones - cost is a small amount - BUT you won't miss a call - download TV tunes, and songs by category - recommend put them on your PC first - THEN choose which ones you want to put on the Pocket PC - if you throw 25MB of songs on the PPC it will choke up - GREAT STUFF and GREAT volumn with the Mp3s - see my note above how to quickly make ANY MP3 your ring tone
A FIX TO MOST OF YOUR PROBLEMS.
FIRMWARE ROM UPDATE (by the Manufacture):
• New Sreeen Lock. No more accidental calls! Main Today Screen provides you the capability to lock the device and prevent inadvertently activity.
• Added a Voice Dialing application to allow you to leverage the handsfree capability already on the device.
• Added a Voice Dialing application to allow you to leverage the handsfree capability already on the device.
• Added the capability to enable Wi-Fi and CDMA simultaneously.
• Corrected an issue where unknowingly, to the user, the device would enter into "Flight Mode"
• Direct Push Technology- Keep your Calendar, Contacts, Tasks, and Inbox up-to-date using Direct Push Technology.
My Ringtones are all visible and useable from my mini SD card. No need to transfer anything. I see every .mp3 on my phone ringer selections. Not sure if this was part of the update, but it works awesome!
I have been successful with the following as well (this is not related to the ROM firmware update):
-Sync via Bluetooth with laptop
-Sync via Exchange Server
-Sync via USB
-Bluetooth Dial Up Modem Tether(Verizonwireless, once you enable Bluetooth dialup)
-Dial Up Modem via USB Tether (Verizonwireless, once you enable Dialup Modem).
I live in the San Diego area, use Verizonwireless. We have EV-DO with great download speeds. I purchased PDAnet (3rd party software) and connect my XV6700 at 1100 Kbps download speeds! The same speeds I had when using my Verizon PCMCIA wireless broadband card.
ROM Firmware update Link: http://www.utstar.com/handsets/view_phone_details.aspx?mcode=XV6700&bID=39&sAct=0
Select Carrier, then downloads. Be sure to first read application instructions first.
Good Luck
is there a way to keep the data connection on permanantly without it timing out?
For Voice Activation you need Microsoft Voice Command 1.5. It's great. It even works with apps on the PPC. You don't have to record phrases for the contacts either. It knows them form the Contacts App.
It rocks !!!
And is well worth the cost.
i just got my pocekt pc yesterday and i was wondering if i could download the music from my labtop to my phone because they have the media player and if so would i be able to use that as a ringtone once it downloaded on my phone?

Is there a way to increase the volume on the hands free so you can hear it? My treo would blow oyu out of the room with this thing you need to have almost total silence. Only real feature I despise, also the one I use the most. So far I would go back to the treo.
Just got off the phone with tech support regarding e-mail issues. With the rom upgrade from verizon ( i just got my xv6700 last week so it was already installed) sent and saved e-mails
will no longer save to the folders on the phone. Is there a work around for this. Can I save these messages to my SD card?
thanks

Be careful with the UTStarcom update, it also installs a "voice speed dial" program which auto launches itself any time you try to use your bluetooth, ie you can't use bluetooth to listen to mp3 files. Also microsoft reader will no longer work, any ideas to fix this?
I was thinking of going with Verizon’s vx6700 for the wifi but Verizon told me I would be charged per kb for using the wifi on my home network, this seems crazy if I own the phone and the wifi network why should I be charged?
Can anyone confirm this?
Thanks.

Has anyone "tethered" their 6700 LEGALLY over Verizon? I got the impression that some folks had done this but Verizon won't sign me up for it. I need a 700p or a Samsung i730. And I'm NOT gonna pay $45/mo for data for the phone and another $60 a month for a laptop card. I think I should switch to Sprint.
How to tether the VX6700 as a USB and Bluetooth Modem. Non-Supported by Verizon. http://forum.brighthand.com/archive/index.php?t-222120.html

I got mine 2 days ago.So far it is amazing. It's a mini-laptop computer that fits in the palm of your hand. No ringtones available yet. Can't wait to hear how they sound.
