samsung i830CES 2006 - As expected, Verizon has announced the Samsung i830. While sounding like a replacement for the i730, the two phones will continue to ship because of different niche features (it drops WiFi and gains GSM for roaming). Oddly the phone is not going to have Windows Mobile 5.0, but the older 2003 version.

Specs of the Samsung i830 include:

  • CDMA/GSM for world roaming, CDMA is used stateside
  • EV-DO high-speed data
  • Windows Mobile 2003 Pocket PC 2nd Edition
  • Slide down QWERTY keyboard
  • SD I/O slot
  • Bluetooth
  • QVGA 65K color tough screen

The Samsung i830 will begin shipping to large business account customers on January 10 and will hit retail stores on the 24th. Verizon Wireless is charging $599 with 2-year service agreement for the device.

Silly to have two phones so similar. Make one with all the features and sell it for $50 more. Will be much more appealing.

I don’t exactly get the justification behind spending so much more on a phone that barely has anything more than the older i730. Other than the GSM, why would I spend $850 on

Just the phone I was waiting for, but Verizon did not want to keep it's promise to replace a 3 month old TREO650 which should have been a GSM phone from the beginning.

Sorry may have to add another provider for my bussiness

When are they going to add a camera??? It's the only reason it's stopping me from buying this phone.
